Request HEART OF NOW to play at a theater,

or coffee shop in your town.

Zak, we've had our go-arounds about movies in the past. And our tastes are, for the most part, quite different. With that said, I can tell you have a great passion for what you do and what you like. I'll be following this thread and looking forward to seeing the end product of your labors. Having read your set up of the story, I think it will be interesting and quite moving. I wish you the best of luck on this project and hope it turns out to be everything you want it to be...

Question for the board...

I have a dilemma about what camera to use. I could afford to shoot with the RED ONE. I'd be renting it from Indierentals.com along with one of their lens packages. but two things: it's likely the DP (i'm talking to two HVX shooters) will be inexperienced with the Red which is a big unknown. second, if I shot on the HVX200 with a 35mm adapter, i could do a lot of pre-emptive shooting days this spring where it's just me, minimal crew and one or two actors out in the city somewhere, picking up scenes guerrila style. you know, if i commit to the HVX200, i could go out and shoot today. grab some timelapse of the city, b-roll, stuff like that.

what would you do? wait for ridiculous picture quality? or go now for a little more freedom to run and gun. i'm not crazy about using both.

Have you checked the RED ONE availablity at Indie? I bet it's booked up so far back that there's a year-long waiting list. Maybe you know Eric and the rest well, though. Those are great guys!

I would say use the one you've got more experience with. Red ONe might be fantastic, but you'd need time to get to know the camera and what you can do with it. The HVX is here now, and if you've used one or own one then you have plenty of practice with it. You KNOW your tools, you know? RED ONE will be around for the next project.

It's a hard choice, but I'd go for HVX+35mm with a lot of light over the Newly Released RED ONE when it hits, based on experiece and the vast knowledge base available.

That's just my [inexperienced] theory.

When do you want to start rolling cameras? RED won't be available until perhaps June/July. While I'd love to say shoot with RED, realistically, it would impact several areas of your filmmaking including post production. RED would be gorgeous, though.

yeah, i know eric. he and kevin (producer) worked out some reservation hold in advance for the Red One.

kholi, blaine, you both make good points. the impact on post will be minimal since i own my own HD post-production company. a reason i can keep my budgets low.

anyway, this will sound crazy to some here, i'm sure.... but i don't know if i want it to have that much resolution. i like the softness and grain and chromatic abberations and breathing and vignetting of 35mm adapters. i like how it looks. is that strange?

check out some of bob gundu's footage. i like how this looks. the RED would be much cleaner. i dont know if i want that. i like that the camera gives a texture or some kind of quality to the footage.

i think i've made my decision. now i just need to convince kevin on why i want to go with the "inferior" camera.

It sounds like you may be answering your own question. You know what you want it to look like and how to get it, so I'd go for it. Personally, I agree with you about a slight softness. That's what I love about a lot of film compared to high definition. I think things can be TOO sharp. A little softness and film grain adds a beautiful touch to a movie.

I, personally, am not a fan of the "glassy" texture the Brevis and M2 adds. Which is why I want to move toward a Letus or an SGpro but if the look suits your footage, then the choice SHOULD be an adapter and the tried and trusted HVX.

Get to it!

The story sounds great, is it (auto)biographical by any chance?

Also, whatever happened to Blue in Green?

The trailers looked awesome and I would love to see the movie.

Best of luck with the new project.

Awesome Zak

I don't feel ready to helm the feature just yet; so Ill live vicariously through you if you don't mind

autobiographical? not directly... but I do keep returning to themes: losing a parent to cancer for example. but in my case, it was my father. so let's say yes, i take a good look at my dysfunctions in life and love and allow the characters to confront the same issues, though the specifics may change.

another reason it's not about "me" is that and I frankly find women to be more interesting (maybe because I'm a man and naturally puzzled by them). their level of intuition, they're in tune with the rhythms of the natural world -- for example, the regulation of the menstrual cycle and its relationship to the moon. this and other complexitiesintrigue me. I'd like to make a career out of telling 100 different stories about 100 different women.

blue in green has run its course. the group that made it (unica) has disbanded, although we see each other frequently -- played poker tonight with two former members. it played in some small festivals, we got some great notices in the LA Times and LA Weekly. we were invited to play at the American Cinematheque. that was the highlight for me. most of the audience was there because of what they read about the film -- not friends and family this time, you know? I remember Cheri Oteri showed up?!?! We did a Q&A and for the first time, i felt like a filmmaker -- like what I had done was validated by an audience that "got it" and genuinely liked it and not because they knew me or someone that worked on it.

the reviews an such are archived at www.blue-in-green.com

that's interesting. it iscapturing a texture of having shot thru a piece of glass. one of my favorite films is double life of veronique. the DP shot thru an interesting array of custom made glass filters to distort and give form to the image. something about the glassiness appeals to me. if feels more organic i guess than the idea of straight, clean, error free digital video.

and yes, i think the HVX is going to be it. anyone in LA own a brevis and want to rent it out for a weekend?

today is supposed to be a writing day but i've spent most of it downloading music and adding it to my ipod. i can't imagine not working to music. i crank it loud and obliterate the "noise" of everything around me so i can concentrate. i play certain songs when working on certain characters, scenes, etc. anyway, i thought i would publish my current (evolving) playlist.

i submitted an iMix of this for the iTunes store which i'll post here as soon as it's approved. that way everyone can see for themselves my complete lack of consistant taste in music.
