Headphone Repair

Ok, so I'm a noob and I'm looking for headphones. Most people recommend the Sony 7506 headphones, so I bought them from Guitar Center. Well, they died on me within a year of me buying them & I only used them three times and now there is no sound on the left side. On top of that, I think the ear pads are the worst. They never did stay on correctly and kept slipping off. So, I'm not too impressed.

My question would be, is getting them repaired even a reasonable idea? Or should I just splurge and by a new pair. Is there anyway I can maybe pull these suckers apart and get them working again? I hate that I spent $100 and only got to use them 3 times, when they seem to last others for years. I have $5 jelly bean headphones that lasted longer than these puppies.

Thanks

I have had mine for 13 years now.. I did get lucky they still work great.

for the price and considering you weren't happy with them to begin I would recommend to try a different model , there are several other alternatives out there from other manufacturers that you might find more comfortable.

then try to fix them yourself if you can, if you can, then you got a great back up set. but I wouldn't throw good money after bad.

The MDR-7506 headphones have a 1 year warranty, so you should be able to get them repaired. It's not "getting lucky" to find a pair that will hang on for years. Most of them do. I'd say you got a rare defect... but again, the 1-year warranty should cover you.

I have two pair. One, I've had since 1997 and the original ear pads are still there (minus the thin, vinyl coverings). The other I have had for only a couple of years and the ear pads slipped off recently. I purchased the Pearstone replacement pads from B&H and they are holding on very tightly.

Mine I bought 15-16 years ago and have not had any of the problems you have had . There is limited repairs you can do because the wires are very hard to work with. So even if your good with a soldering iron it's a big challenge. You might find a repair place but I doubt it's cost effective.

I had a friend who had one side go out (she had them over twenty years) and I took it apart to take a look. In her case it was the wire that crosses over that broke. I would make sure that the adapter is on correctly, and tight (if your going into a 14" jack. and just clean it in general and also make sure it's the phones not what you are plugging it into.

If they are broken then I would go for another brand. These don't seem to fit your use habits and if your only using then three times a year these are kind of pricey and maybe not nec.

If you still have to box, there's a diagram on there that might help you repair them. 7506 parts are readily available from any of the usual production sound shops if you need something, but I'd bet it's just a bad connection that you could re-solder. As for the ear pads, look into add-on pads like these.

If they died within a year, are they not under warranty?
The wires that go to the mini speakers in headphones are very thin. Consider a brand that has replaceable wires with spring loaded sockets, like *some* of the Sennheisers (I use the HD 580, 600). A new wire runs $11. Or consider the ATH M50s which are among the best of "closed" design.
HPs are a personal choice, there is no "best" model, just try out a few until you get what you like, read the zillions of reviews at headfi, those guys are the headphone specialists.

Thank you for all of the replies. I found the receipt for my headphones and it looks like I'm a couple of months outside of the one year warranty. I bought them in October of last year. Oh well...I've tried them in all kinds of different connections, right on down to my iPod and I'm still only getting the sound on one side. Maybe I did just get a bad pair. I'll do some search in the forums and look at recommendations for replacements.

Thanks everyone
