Heading to Nicaragua - Need Smaller Sticks and Head

OK, I'll admit it - I haven't used anything but Sachtler for the last 20 years and am spoiled.

Situation is I'm heading to Nicaragua for a 10 day shoot in mid-Feburary and don't want to take the full blown Sachtler 20 with me. I've got an older set of Manfroto 3120 sticks and am thinking of buying the Manfrotto 701 head (can deal with not having ball head) to carry a stripped down (no rails/matte box) AF100 ( w/Lumix 14-45 and Tokina 28-80) mainly for interview setups. Not really too worried about anything else, just small size and weight for trecking here and there and bouncing around in the back of a pickup or LandCruiser.

Also taking the 7D with the 11-16 as backup along with solar charger and rain cover that fits both 7D and AF100.

Anyone use the M 701 in a pinch?

Regards,
Scott

I am a Sachtler guy too so I understand your attachment. I have used a 701. It actually works OK for the price but you will not be selling your Sachtler anytime soon.

if you can find an older o'connor head model 515 on ebay and put it on a set of legs you like you"re golden. I have 2 515's and they suit the af 100 really well. And they are O'connors so they last.

what about a Sachtler Ace? I've got the 701 for use on a slider and it's ok but nothing like as good as a proper fluid head.

Thanks, Paul and Tom. Just ordered the 701. Ironically, a secondary application was to mount it on a slider. Mark, I checked eBay and didn't see one listed but thanks for the heads-up.

I'm happy with it's performance on a slider so you should be fine - just don't expect to be able to pan/tilt in complicated movements.
