HDX 1080 not a native resolution?

What do you need the resolution for? The biggest market that I see for 1080 is converting to film as most consumer devices (HDTVs & Procectors) that support 1080i have a native resolution of 720 or 733. For converting to film I have to believe that the HVX will do a much better job than the DVX and there are several DVX movies on the big screen. I'm no exspurt but it seems the 720 24P that is true 24 images on the hard drive will be appealing as it will give you the most playing time when a Hi Def disc becomes available and it's well within the HVX comfort zone.

By the time there is a lot of HVX200 created content available, it's quite likely this will have changed and there will be a large number of 1080P televisions available.

Don't you think people will be more concerned with quality than playing time? I know that if I had the choice between a 720p24 disk and a 1080p24 disk, I'd take the 1080 every time.

Personally, if I were to purchase an HVX200 (I won't be), I would be very tempted to use the 1080P format exclusively for everything that didn't involve slo-motion, because of the low horizontal sampling in the DVCPRO-HD 720p format. Of course, DVCPRO-HD 1080P has pretty limited horizontal sampling as well, but it would at least down-convert to square pixel 720P admirably.

Are you quoting the resolution chart or do you actually know Panasonic trade secrets.

The "pixel resolution" is VERY different from the "line" resolution.

HVX has more compression than DVX, right? Is it a real problem to blow-up for 35mm film-out, or not? [comparatively DVX or even - why not? - F900 (CineAlta)]

All I know is the resolution chart Jan showed us was dynamite, and so has every bit of footage I have seen of it, Barry's, Jarred's, and a music video already shot on it at the Moviola booth. I believe what I see. All the apparent sharpness of any unnamed HDV cameras, but with 5x the data stream, no motion artifacts due to heavy compression, and 4:2:2 colors. Sold. I think that's the best way to evaluate a camera anyhow, "Forget the pixels, tell me how does it look?"
It looks dyno-mite!
