HDV with dropped frames

live event, just cleaned heads, four instances of dropped frames.

when i capture w/ fcp, it creates a new clip after instance of dropped frames. the new clip starts ten seconds after the instance. losing ten seconds is pretty tough with a live event. i'd rather have a 1/24 second glitch.

has anyone else run into this issue? and if so, any workarounds?

thanks.

have you tried turning off scene detection in FCP. Not a FCP user, but I know it exists, that way it should capture everything, including the droped frame, but also the frames directly after that.

yeah. i tried that. the thing is, it takes fcp a while to see code after the break (even though i see code on the camera). interestingly, after playing the first break through a few times, it went away. not so lucky with the second one. errrr.

in the dv world, i never had this problem. don't know if it has something to do with the compression cadence...

You can turn off scene detection and also tell FCP not to try to recapture or create a new clip upon dropped frames or timecode breaks.

I've had a few HDV dropouts here and there (never with MQ tapes) and interestingly enough, they often righted themselves after rewinding and scanning the tape a little, and then recapturing.

In general, I would turn off the "create new clip upon dropped frames" but keep scene detection on...unless you want to capture the entire tape as one single clip.

thanks for your input guys.

i'm noticing that i've actually got a timecode break at the dropped frames, and fcp will always abort the capture at a timecode break (even though i tell it to "warn after capture" and not "abort"). in the world of dv, i would just switch to a non-controllable device. perhaps i need to figure out how to lay down some new timecode on this tape.

I've had dropout -- but I've not seen timecode lost. (lost frames of video, but kept audio)

You must have had a large clog.

Worst case scenario: You could capture with DVHSCap and encode as HDV 1080 24p from the raw m2t's via MPEG Streamclip. No timecode, but you would have a continous clip ready to edit.

Thanks for the recommendation Elton. Do you know where I can get DVHSCap? Can't seem to find it on the Apple website anymore...

EDIT: Never mind... Found it. Part of firwire sdk 22

Hey Elton, thanks. You've been very helpful. Got enough frames w/ DVHSCap to make it look a little less bad...

I got rid of two just by playing through the tape a few times (they just disappeared) and was able to edit one out entirely (thank god for repeats in piano music). the last glitch is probably about four frames. it's very noticeable, but not nearly as bad as it was when I started. :-)

Interesting. Funny how those dropouts often go away because the error correction works on another pass at the footage. :)
