I recently had to transfer my HDV project into a BetaSP format for broadcast, and tried to see what was the best way to do so, avoiding as much lost in the quality as possible, and thought I'd share the results:
Option 1 was to simply export the project to tape into the A1 as HDV, and then downconvert to the Beta deck via the component output.
Option 2 was to render the HDV project into a Quicktime file, and then transfer that file to Beta via Avid. The file used was a 24bit Apple Animation codec and the size was a little over 4gb for the 4 min. project.
After trying both ways, I ended up going with option 2. Although the A1's realtime downconvert did a really good job, it still had some artifacts/pixels around the edges compared to the Quicktime file. This actually makes sense, since the A1 does the downconvert in realtime, as opposed to a file that takes much longer to render.
The A1 did come close however...
