HDV capture to harddrive.

Hey guys,

Just wondering how many people have external harddrives in their work flow.
Since I'm using my G4Pbook and my A1, I have one firewire port and a USB port. Is data transfer fast enough that I can capture HDV in FCP to a USB2 external Harddrive?

I know the debate between firewire and USB2, and how firewire is more dependable and most cases faster, and in an ideal situation I usually stick with ones that have both. And easily capture SD to FCP to USB2. But with my current limited cashflow a 500gig USB2 seems a bit more attractive than a simliar priced 300gig USB2&Firewire.

Any insight?

I don't have direct experience with Macs but I have no problem capturing HDV output to a USB2 connected harddrive with DV Rack HD 2.0 on my PC laptop. As I understand it, the data rate of a HDV stream is about the same as a SD DV stream.
