HDTV Flicker

I hope this is in the right spot, please move this if it's not (my apologies).

My wife and I just recently bought an HDTV. It's 1080p so I know the problem isn't because it's interlaced (to my understanding), and at Best Buy looked great. However now that we're home, we're noticing a lot of ... "flickering" in the tv. It's not quite as bad as when you don't de-interlace a photo from a screen grab in FCP to play on your TV, but it's definitely noticeable. I tried googling for some answers as to what's causing this, and how to stop it, but I don't even know what to look for. The flicker is kinda like a quick pulsating of that same color. Does that make sense?

Any ideas on a fix? Oh, and it's cable straight from the wall. No cable box.

your tv shouldn't be flickering. have you tried other inputs to make sure it is not your cable?

Yeah, just tried my xbox 360 ... same thing. It really only happens on the darker colors. I don't want to use the wrong word. Maybe not flicker. Pulsate? Strobe?

It's minor but very distracting. It didn't look like this at Best Buy

Man, that's what I was afraid of. I hate unpacking new stuff I'm excited about only to have to pack it right back up. I'll head back over there tomorrow. Thank for your help.

Ran up there today and the woman told me that even though my TV picked up an HD signal, I needed an HD converter box. Awesome. I got the same pulsating on my 360, and she told me that I needed to HDMI connect for that. We'll find out tomorrow when the box gets here.

Maybe a long shot, but are your mains plugs filtered? i.e surge protectors, these electronics devices are very sensitive to slight variations in voltages.

Anhar,

she is wrong. it shouldn't matter whether you have a converter box or hdmi cable.

Yeah, the Dynex.

As for how it's hooked up, it's just a coaxial cable straight from the wall. The 360 is plugged in via component

Take it back and exchange it for another. Apparently those things are hit and miss. Don't let the lady tell you anything different.

Cheap panels with nice pictures if you can get the right one.

Yeah, we're picking up the converter box that Cox is giving us tomorrow. But that line comes in from the wall to the box as coaxial. What type of line does it use to go from the box to the TV? i assumed coax.

Yes, the 360 is set to HD. I have it on 1080p via the system setting blade, and HD on the back plug

That's what I was afraid of. I hate living on the second floor. At least it's not plasma.

No. The HD converter will have outputs for Component and most likely HDMI. Coax goes to the box, Component or HDMI goes from the box to the HDTV.
You will have to use one of them in order to get HD.

Any chance of posting a picture of what you are seeing?

Mike
