HDR video shot using two 5D Mark II

I found this clip today, looks good.

"This video highlights several clips we've made using our new High Dynamic Range (HDR) process. Video is captured on two Canon 5D mark II DSLRs, each capturing the exact same subject via a beam splitter. The cameras are configured so that they record different exposure values, e.g., one camera is overexposed, the other underexposed. After the footage has been recorded, we use a variety of HDR processing tools to combine the video from the two cameras, yielding the clips you see above..."
 
This is an idea i've been toying with for years, ever since i first played with tone mapping in Photomatix - ideally they could have 3 cameras capturing super lows mids and highs... However, this is quite impressive, albeit heavy handed on the actual treatment/processing

I love the subtle effect on the city scene, I'd like to see the shot of the actor toned down a bit , but crazy to see. Far more impressive to me than 3d. It is what I'd use a beam splitter for!
 
Cool stuff. I liked the more realistic processing much better. I might have to play around with that some. Where can you rent a beam splitter?

I'm building one this weekend. :) It might involve duct-tape, panty-hose, and chewing-gum....but hopefully I'll have something posted before the weekend is out. :)
 
Is the process on how to do it with the beam splitter on their site or are you guys taking it into your own hands to figure it out? I'd love to try it out myself.

To be honest, I've been working on some other projects for a while now....and I was contemplating shooting 3K video with a rig/setup...really just musing to be honest. (That discussion here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=222664)

Then I started thinking about it...and I realized that, I'm pretty sure I can build this thing without too much (additional) effort. I've been working on a DIY Steadicam, an ULTRA affordable Mattbox (less than 70usd), and musing/poking around with how to use the high fps PHOTO cameras with some trigger/sych rigging to compose 3K videos.

So...to answer your question. Yepper...we're trying to figure it out for ourselves. The rig I'm not worried about, I'm pretty sure I've got that one in the bag. The post processing, I've got some ideas, but they are all NOT GOING TO BE FUN. (Lightroom + Droplets in Photoshop CS5)

Is there a AE expert in the house that could chime in please? How would you use AE to process High-exposure footy with low-exposure-footy to produce this effect?
 
I've got a hunch it has to do with Luma Keying. Or the best method would be.

I've already done the part (for this weekend) for the rig that would have held me up...that is the "see-through" part of the rig. It's done. I went and had it done over my "late-lunch", so that I could TEAR this thing up this weekend. I'll post pics when it's done. :)
 
excuse my ignorance, but can't you just edit your video, overexpose it in your NLE and render it uncompressed, then render again underexposed....then create a new timeline, bring in both renders and tweek/blend for HDR?

don't punch me in the face...this is a serious question.

That a great question. (No sarcasm here) Would you mind shooting some footy with your camera (under on one shot), (over on one shot)...and try that work flow you suggest? I've never tried so I don't rightly know. :) I'm going to be a little tied up trying to improve the rig....I could honestly use some help with the workflows. See me beg for help here:

you might be able to fake an HDR effect that way, but ultimately it's not true HDR.

With that method you're trying to add information that wasn't captured in the original image. You're instead asking your software to guess.
 
It looks like they've just whacked on the Photoshop/After Effects with a plugin like Topaz or the new HDR tool.

Seems really pointless to me to do it on a 5DII with the compression mush :|
