HDR video camera

I wonder why the manufaturers like Panasonic/Canon/Sony/JVC/RED have not come yet with a video cam with an extended dynamic range equal to film or better. The simple solution would be imo to use a 3-sensor camera and use one sensor for under-exposure, one for normal exposure and the third for over-exposure. A onboard CPU with algoritm could then combine the 3 picture in to 1. If the level of HDR is left the the control of the operator next to a fully automatic mode, it would be a perfect solution imo. Any other ideas?

Invent it, patent it, and then make the big bucks.

I thought one of the RED cams did something similar, but I may be incorrect.

Even a 2 sensor solution would work - with an internal mirror rig. The mirror could be slightly tinted to naturally create the underexposure. If needs be the camera could record to two separate cards and then be combined in post.

Epic and Scarlet both have an option called HDRx that allows you to record dual streams for HDR video.

I may be mistaken, but i believe the HDRx mode uses two images at different shutter speeds to achieve the difference in exposure, hence it being impractical for certain situations that have a lot of movement.

I tried an experiment once where I just shot my footage and imported it to Premier. I placed 3 copies of the footage ontop of each other and played around with some Gamma settings/ exposure settings and then overlayed them on top of each other to try and duplicate HDR. It wasn't perfect, but that's how I tried to cheat the system a bit. Then I just nested all of the footage together and then went from there with Color correction.

Say you are shooting a pan or "tracking"-shot in a tunnel and your object is moving from the dark tunnel in daylight. A "HDR-Camera" could make this shot count if you can set one sensor to the light of the tunnel and an other one to daylight. Of course this shot can be made with an auto Iris cam or with two AF100 locked together on the same tripod. Just thinking.......
