GH4 HDMI OUT to External Recorder

The Gh4 will record 10bit 422 in 24htz mode progressive to the ninja. But you won't be able to record to the card internally unless you set the camera to 8 bit out. I do it all the time. Also, make sure to set your luminance to 16-235.

Now for other frame rates. In 60htz or 50 htz modes it sends the signal out as an interlaced wrapper. You can still record either 8bit or 10bit, but you will have to deinterlace in post. This is the feature they need to fix on either panasonics side or atomos side.

Now get this. I've done lots of shooting in 24 htz mode 10bit out to recorder and put it up against recording 420 8bit 4K internally and dropped both into a 1080 timeline and applied the same color grade and I don't see much of a difference.

Can I ask what picture profile/settings you're using? Thanks very much

Maybe because of the way you're viewing it. Watch the thing on a large monitor or on a big screen. I'm sure you'll see the difference there.

Mr.BIll: I hear you, I wasn't so much thinking about getting an increase in colour space value, I was more curious about whether a 4:2:2 space might better preserve the colour values that are sampled by the 4K image.
Because the camera obtains its 1080 from a 4K source, but keeps it in the 4:2:0 space while making the conversion, I thought perhaps there just might be a slight benefit to shooting 4K and then extracting a 1080 from it in a 4:2:2 space…..
Not so sure, now that I think a little more about it.

i get you - so although the original source is 8 bit 4:2:0, you would ingest into your editing system in a 10bit 4:2:2 project. I can't see that hurting although it's always going to be a 4:2:0 image.

I watch it on a 10 bit monitor. I also watch my footage on a 70inch DLP and a 200 inch projection.

Look, grab your stills camera. Set it to Jpeg and take 2 shots. One at 2 megapixels and one at 8 megapixels. Go into photoshop and color correct the 8mp image and push it pretty good. Apply the very same adjustments to the 2mp image. That is what were dealing with. Hell, even a 2mp RAW vrs an 8mp Jpeg would be a challenge.

Where i can download a 4K files from HDMI output of the GH4? I want to see the uncompressed quality

Hi all. Just curious if anyone has more experience with the GH4 10-bit 24p to an external recorder (particularly PIX240i but others if relevant)? My issue remains: PIX only recognizes signal as 10-bit and also the Picture Profile to the PIX looks different than to the internal card (in 8-bit mode). Can anyone confirm that they get a true 10-bit output from the GH4 to external recorder?

I've tested the GH4 with my PIX240 at 24p and the PIX tells me its receiving an 8-bit signal despite the camera set to 10-bit. As I live in a PAL world I've also tried it in 50Hz and hit the same issue that it will only output a 50i at lower res, or 50p at higher res. I mainly want to use the HDMI output for monitoring, so it looks like I'll have to get me a new monitor (and possibly EVF) that accepts 50p... But it would be really sweet if Panasonic could just allow us to change the output according to our needs!

Looks like it's not just my camera. If you figure out the problem, I'll be curious to hear (and I'll do the same).

@skimmel - I think we have to wait for a Panasonic firmware upgrade to sort out the hdmi output. Atomos say they're lobbying Panasonic on their forum, which can only be a good thing.

Do you think this means the GH4 isn't really sending out the proper signal to do 10-bit throught the HDMI port? Or, is it an issue with the PIX recorder?

@skimmel - yes, I can't see the GH4 working with any recorder at the moment, unless you're shooting 24p.
