HDMI Atomos Ninja Hard Disk Recorder 795$

Hey Dave, any idea when your next shipment will go out to B&H? I've ordered a Ninja and its out of stock. Looking forward to using it!

I don't have the details in front of me but I don't think there are any real issues with supply and you shouldn't have to wait too long. Thanks for choosing a Ninja!

Update: I've just checked and it's going to be just a few days.

I'd choose it if ATOMOS would put some samples on their website for us to download and play with, along with native footage. On paper it sounds good. SAMPLES Atomos!

David, you're a patient man.

Rather than continue to rent a nanoFlash, this week I decided to buy a Ninja… then sell it after other recorders are released.

The images from my Sony Z5 and VG10 look great.
Now, I realize... by the time other recorders hit the market, my Ninja will have more than paid for itself.
I haven't decided whether to get the F3 or FS100… but it will work with both.
So it's a keeper... amazing value for the money.

My problem: I have a shoot soon, which requires an EX3 and 4:2:2.
I was thinking of buying a SDI to HDMI mini converter, then selling the converter, when I buy a second recorder (SDI).

Question: Is this a good idea… which converter would be best?

From what I saw (and we tried many of them), the Black Magic converters have the best signal quality.

Did we ever get a clear answer about whether the Ninja will handle 24p output from the Sony NEX-FS100 since it requires a pulldown removal? If not, this is clearly a dealbreaker.

Also, I noticed the new firmware says it adds RGB support, is that just for source compatibility or will recording modes be added to take advantage of that. Apparently the FS100 supports RGB over HDMI so it would be great if the Ninja were compatible and could actually capture that RGB stream without having to downconvert it to 4:2:2 for recording.

Any plans to support 60p recording? HDMI certainly supports it and it seems the FS100 will support it. The FS100 is on track to be a hugely popular camera from what I can tell, and the Ninja seems like a very well suited accessory for it, but having to go back to internal AVCHD recording for 1080p60 shots seems like a significant issue. Also, if 444/RGB recording support and 60p support can be added to the ninja, I imagine Ninja's will be flying off the shelves in the next month or so as the FS100 is released.

4:4:4 with 1080p60 at 1 thousand or 1 thousand and a half i think its no possible. I think even that prores are not capable of.
For 60p with sony nex-fs100 you need to go for cinemartin or cinedeck

Based on what? Both are clearly listed formats in the official prores whitepaper from 2009. I think you may be mistaking HD-SDI limitations for other limitations. Most pro recorders are designed around HD-SDI and HD-SDI 3G/DL. 3G HD-SDI, with its 3Gbps limit may not support 1080p60 10b RGB since by my calculation that is ~3.7Gbps which is beyond the 3Gbps limit (perhaps it can do it in 8b which is ~3Gbps). HDMI on the other hand is spec'd up to 10Gbps for v1.3 and up (v1.0 was introduced in 2002 and still is spec'd for 5Gbps) so it can handle 1080p60 RGB 8-16b in its sleep. The real question becomes whether Atomos's FPGA can handle it and whether they want to invest in firmware development for a big update like that. Even if it could only do 60p at lower bitrates or RGB at limited framerates, it would still have a huge leg up on the competition. This is the kind of update people would probably pay extra $$$ for if Atomos really went for it. And I think their focus on HDMI and support for a format (prores) that natively supports 444/RGB and 60p puts them in a good position to tackle something like this.

I'm guessing that the features you seek would not be possible for the existing Ninja. Perhaps a future product, but I doubt the hardware as it is, can not handle 60p.

David can you answer if any effort is being made to add pulldown removal to the ninja. We know the nanoflash added that feature with a firmware update so it might be similarly possible for you to do so. I know different cameras might implement different signals but would you add pulldown as needed if enough requests come into you for a particular camera. I'm putting in my request for the Fs100 , respectfully.

Can you use the Samurai on both a Nikon D7000 and an NEX FS100? Is the ProRes codec that much better than Sony's?

Unfortunately I can't answer this without revealing future product plans!

BTW, our announcements, when they come, appear first on Twitter: @atomosninja, and, while I'm on the subject, our latest newsletter is out:

Not a direct plug for Atomos, by the way - there are some in-depth articles that answer questions about HDMI and external recorders.

Your response and your newsletter stating that you will be releasing a new program called stripper to quickly remove pulldown gives me an idea of what to expect. I appreciate that you are here and listening.

I bought the Ninja to use with my JVC GY-HM100U and I am impressed. The Ninja is an amazing solution when one needs to monitor and record uncompressed HD video. I bought two Intel 120GB flash drives. The results are wonderful. It is refreshing to buy a product that works, is easy to operate, and at a great price point that they don't skimp on things like a case, batteries, ect.

Well done!

I had a chance to sit down with Jeromy Young from Atomos and have a chat.

From what Ive been told Stripper should be available soon and from all accounts its going to be a straight forward solution.
