There is no such thing as an "HD" and "SD" miniDV tape. They're just tapes and you can record HD or SD to them just the same. There are "HDV" tape which are supposedly less resistant to dropouts, although having used both I have seen no evidence that HDV tapes are any better. If you're having trouble capturing it's something else, not the tapes.
