HD to DVD workflow question

I'm an HD noob, so forgive me for this in advanced. I attempted a search btw. Sometimes it works, and other times like today it doesn't:).
I just got finished editing some 720p footage, and am now trying to burn it quickly so that my client can watch it on my 46" HD monitor. I was hoping to burn it in iDVD for time sacks. I have DVD Studio, but have yet to use it yet.

1. Can I burn in HD using iDVD?
2. If so what type of Media should I use, and where is a good less expensive place to buy from?
3. What type of player will I need to play the HD media.

I own a Samsung up coversion DVD player. Will it play my HD media?

Thanks

as far as I know, standard dvd players will only play 480i(p) footage, since that's technically the SD medium. You'd have to edit in HD, then export in SD resolution to make it work on a DVD player, but then again I haven't really tried it in dvdstudiopro4 yet, although I really should get on that as I have a project coming up that I have to showcase for...crap

But to answer your question, no I don't think you can play HD footage on a SD dvd player, but in your case it might be different, try it out and see if it works!

I guess what I'm asking is for some good insight on media (HD dvds) and a player. I'm hoping to play some 720p footage on my 46" Sharp LCD TV for a client. This client has need for HD quality footage. I am looking to create a workflow from camera, to NLE, to DVD titling , to DVD player. I am currently working on Final Cut Studio. Just got my FCS2 up grade, but have yet to install it. I have a Samsung Upconterted DVD player which claims to upconvert up to 1080i from standard definition, but I don't see it. I also have a Sony Blueray PS3 player, but I really doubt if that will play any HD footage other then Blueray disc. Like I said I just got into this whole shooting in HD thing. I've grown used to watching it and can't get enough of it. So now I really want to shoot HD and be able to offer it to clients who request it. Hope this isn't too confusing.

Short answer is we're still not completely there with HD DVD or Blu-Ray on the Mac. Obviously it's possible to make these sorts of discs just not on the Mac with DVDSP as of this moment. Not that this won't change soon. My suggestion for best quality is DVI to HDMI cable from the Mac and playout a 720p ProRes HQ. That should look incredible on the plasma. If you want more info on how to actually make an HD-DVD- check into your DVDSP manual for some limitations and suggested workflows.

Actually, DVD SP will burn a HDDVD onto a standard purple DVD-R disk from what ever sequence you send it from FCP. You can get about 25 minutes or so. Problem is, you can't play it back on the Mac (AFAIK).

You have two options with HD source material. Burn it in SD to a DVD-R and play it in a regular DVD player, at 480, or

Burn it as an HDDVD on a regular DVD disk, and play it in a Toshiba HDDVD player.

and Charlie is correct, upconverting players only play standard DVDs, thay just make the output signal HD for your HDTV.

Like I said in my post- if you want to look at the HD-DVD making options in DVDSP you should look into the manual. And what you'll find is you can't really make a genuine fully compatible Blu-Ray or HD-DVD as you buy in the store. Not quite yet...

Well to be honest it's simply not been a priority on the Mac side. My gut feeling is that Apple is somewhat reluctant to embrace Blu-Ray or HD-DVD because the format war is ongoing. There are tools that exist on the PC side to make Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. Not as simple as DVDSP and in some cases quite a bit more expensive. But they do the trick if you really need to make it happen.

We're coming into a new cycle in January at MacWorld. If you look at the rumor sites like Thinksecret and Apple Insider you'll see the likelihood we're getting some new Mac hardware. And perhaps we'll see HD DVD or Blu-Ray addressed then.

On the ps3 there must be a way to play h264hd files. I know handbrake has a setting for the ps3, might be worth giving it a try.
