HD output options

Assuming I pick up the HVX when the new rebate is announced, how would I output HD footage?

I'm assuming I can, 1) down res to SD tape, 2) burn to DVD. Does # 2 require a HD DVD burner, if so, how much are we talking? Are there any other output options besides these two?

Thanks,

going to DVD will be SD - you can go to blu-ray or HD-DVD for actual HD preservation. There's also a way to get HD onto a regular DVD but you still need an HD-DVD player to playback with, but I dont know any more than that. Everything I shoot currently goes to a 16:9 DVD or the web. Nobody (that pays me) that can play HD content so I dont bother.

Okay, so it sounds like SD is the norm for now. With that said, how difficult is down ressing?

I was going to start another thread to ask another question, I may as well ask it here.

If I pick up the HVX and shoot SD to get famillar with the camera. When I get ready to learn/shoot HD will the functions be the same, (other than lighting, focusing etc)? If not, how is it different?

One more. If been trying to download the Owners manual from the Panasonic website without any luck. Is there anyone out there with 2 HVX that is willing to let me have one of the manuals? I would really like to get a head start...

yea should be no problem. You can shoot HD with p2 cards, then down convert the footage in cmaera to DV Tapes. Slomotion, over cranking, everything.

or you can shoot HD, then import it into your NLE, edit, then make a SD output fromthere, preserving the HD master, with a SD work copy. When your ready for HD its there.

Airforceguy, We've mostly shot SD since the HD glass to delivery process is still evolving.
The time we've spent with the HVX on these less critical shoots has made us much more proficient with this versitile camera. There will be the typical SD to HD technical side, but at least you'll know your camera.
After 10 years with our same BetaCam I welcomed the "dating" period with the HVX.
Enjoy.

I'm been outputting HD DVDs to a Toshiba A1 for about six months.

Premiere Pro Mac, when released, will support blu ray at least and I believe HD DVD

Apple has a press release at NAB a week from Sunday.

Ulead (Corel) just released a new product that burns HD or blu ray.

I keep everything in HD right up to output. That way whenever any client upgrades to HD on the viewing end I can just re-output to blu-ray or hd-dvd.

No one knows. From what I have been seeing, it is very likely that there won't be a new rebate. It's possible that a card would be bundled, or that there may be a price drop. Or, probably more likely, just an all around drop in p2 prices with the release of 16gig'ers, or whatever.

Doesn't sound like there will be any rebate extension though.

Hey guys, thanks for the input, you've been a great help. I'm just a little bit smarter (dangerous) now thanks to you guys.

Thanks THoff for the link, I've been trying to download it for over a week now. By the way, I have a PC.

TedRR, I too cut my teeth on a Betacam. As a matter of fact, it's all I have right now. That's why I so desparately want to upgrade. Thanks to the IRS, I have the HVX in my sites...

i use FCP 5.1.2, work in an HD timeline, ( 720P mostly ) and downrez with compressor to SD and output dvd's mostly. It has thus far given really sharp images. if that helps at all... I might cry if theres not a price drop in P2 after NAB.

you can edit in native dvcprohd (if you have final cut pro) then drop the final edit into an uncompressed SD sequence then export that for SD DVD encoding. i do it all the time and it makes the BEST looking SD DVDs ive ever seen!

airforceguy, one of the least expensive programs out today for authoring HD DVD or Blu-Ray disks is Ulead's DVD Moviefactory 6 Plus. It is brand-new and still has some bugs, but it is a solution that doesn't require you to cobble together something using different tools from different publishers.

Depending on the playback device, you may not even need a HD DVD or Blu-Ray burner (the former don't even exist yet). Some standalone burners allow you to play a disk recorded on regular red laser DVDs as long as they conform to the HD DVD or Blu-Ray authoring format (codec, bitrate, file structure etc.). You obviously won't be able to put very long HD productions onto a DVD, but most of us don't produce hour-long movies anyway.

I am light years away from authoring in HD, no need for it right now, maybe later this year though. I was just curious about what are my options with HD footage once shoot.

I do have a couple more off the wall questions. For a novice shooter, how good is the HVX out of the box? Cinematography is my weakest talent as for as filmmaking goes, but I do want to spend the next year or so learning everything there is to know about the camera.

Last question. How should I spend my first 40 or so hours with the camera? I know this is a very vague question, but I would like to know what should I concentrate on out the box?
