HD dubbing.

Greetings yall,

I need a Firewire HD to dub onto in the field for my 200a. I have a d/c power source so that isn't a issue I just wanted to post the drive I was thinking about buying to make I wasn't buying something I can't use. Also if you have any suggestions on which drive I should use post them too. My P2 card is 16gb.

Also I know Barry's book says you can use a USB 2.0 with OTG protocol but it doesn't seem to me that there is a way to connect the USB 2.0 mini (on camera) with the USB 2.0 mini (on the hard-drive) anyone?

Saving money is always a good thing. But, typically you get what you pay for when you try to cut corners in order to save. I use only G-technology drives in the field. They are incredibly dependable, durable and worth every penny. I have yet to lose a single file over the past four years of using these drives.

90% of my production drives i get are OWC mercury elite. i have a half dozen or more of them in single drive or raid configs and ive never had a problem. i usually buy the quad interface versions so i'll be ready for any connection type...

a good rule is stay away from about 95% of what you can find in an office supply/bigbox store.

i also have one of these:

its proving to be pretty handy for one-off clients...

I use OWC's in my studio, but have a few Seagate FW drives for field offload. No problems yet. Remember, each offload will consume 16GB and create a new partition, regardless of how many minutes on the P2 card, so fill it up before offloading to save space (unless you need to sort it by something specific on the shoot).

Do not skimp on drives that you offload to.

You can't get the footage back

OWC, G-Tech, iStoragePro, Caldigit all make good ones.
