Hi,

Link is cut, Server is down. The bandwidth is used up for this month.

New thread guys and gals! This one is dedicated to wmv's instead.

Here is some more HD-100 created content. The documentary, independant film, music video, commercial, nature and outdoors were all shot here in Chicago. The drama and sports were shot in the orient. The oriental drama clips and sports clips were not raw m2t to me but nevertheless it displays what the HD-100 is all about. This is a very small sampling of clips derrived from a bigger pool, destined for 35mm film transfer and then projected at Columbia College (Chicago) on Feb 2. This is wmv. The clips are not color corrected and use various scene files and camera manipulation. We want to see what these raw scene files look link in transfer.

Sorry Mac guys, I'd love to put the elementary streams up for you but it's just to big.

If you'd like to join in and see how well the HD-100 transfers to 35mm with your own eyes at Columbia College, register at the JVC professional web site for the JVC sponsored day.

Have fun and keep shooting...

That is absolutely gorgeous stuff! Congrats big time!! I've seriously been thinking of getting the HD-100 and now I'm pretty sure I will. You do great work. Really.

nice, thanks for sharing.
considering it wasn't color corrected/enhanced at all that's fairly impressive.
I couldn't help but laugh at the indie film part though. Not because of how it looked, just what was being presented out of it.

Stephen,

Absolutely stunning footage. I honestly thought I was watching the Polar Express when I saw that first gorgeous train shot.

The JVC HD100 really does render some beautiful images and is the only other camera I've seen that seems to have that DVX/HVX organic quality.

Excellent examples, thanks very much for taking the time to do this.

I thought the same thing, truly beautiful that first shot was, I replayed that part several times.

Train was my favorite footage too. Definitely has an organic filmic look to it too.

Stephen, any chance that we can get the M2 file for that train shot?

There was if there isn't yet. But there is also a problem regarding the motion, it's noticeable and even without comparing with the wmv file where this terrible effect disappeared.

So, it's not a GOP problem or something like all the frequent HDV attacks...

Why does it occur, Stephen?

Train shot was hot, indeed. Just SICKENING how nice this HD stuff is. Hmm, HVX or JVC? Sounded like the JVC surprised everyone & performed better than expected in the shoot out.

That skip in motion you're seeing is an edited cut. I cut out the middle of the train arrival to save space on the encode.

So in general are you seeing much in the way of artifacting or dropouts? There are a lot of people bashing the HDV format and I can't tell if it's all just BS or not at this point.

It seems to me the HVX has a better Codec but the camera isn't close to being capable of taking advantage of the Codec - which is why the JVC looks so good or better by comparison.

BTW - this is the nicest footage from either camera I've seen yet. I don't know if it's just the compression or what, but there's not nearly the noise that the HVX clips are showing. I haven't seen any greenscreen footage with motion out of the JVC. I've seen some good keys from the HVX.

On paper I love the HVX. I even like P2 better. But the JVC seems to have a look that appeals to my eye more... this sucks. Hahaha.

Stephen IS the responsible for the BEST HD filmic footage that I could see from a 1/3" CCD camera.

My $0.2/doubts:
. 1280x720 will it be enough to big screen? Specially @2.35:1 widescreen ratio? If croped, of course, but recently it was possible to follow here [ LINK ] some interesting stuff about a lens adapter possibility.
. The noise-like-film-grain will it be more 16mm blown-up? Than a cleanest HD source like Z1U or even HVX footage that all are saying it seems to be between Super16 and 35mm, despite the noise PROBLEM, specially @low_light?

WOW is all I can say. If the HVX had that beautiful location and setting of the train, I bet it would have captured some awesome footage as well. I bet if we had a DVX out there, we would have some beautiful footage. With that gorgeous train shot, it would be hard to have BAD footage. :-)

I don't know. I'm personally not worried about doing a film out. I guess to my way of thinking the film out process is so expensive that I'd be renting an F900. I know a guy who got one for $10k for a full month. Now if you're doing a long form documentary that's not a possibility. In that case I'd get a JVC or Canon. The size and format fit that use.

I just want something that looks good "to me" in 16:9 and HD. I want the extra resolution of HD for compositing and keying. I'll end up on DVD. I'm going to try to run my own 3 way test at some point.

I liked "Everything", and really digged the Soccer footage!

And with my "amature" eye... if you didn't tell me it was the HD-100, i would have believed it if you told me it was film.

Yeah...maybe with a lot of noise too...or as darkness (it's the word!) as possible in order not to reveal the compression artifacts...

Unfortunately (or maybe not), that's the way like a brand agnostic must interpret the HVX_footage@low_light (after all the stuff that it was possible to see).

No artifacts that I've seen in my own footage and edits of other shooters. I'm really happy and satisfied with the performance of the codec and resulting footage. Drop outs are rare if you stick to JVC tapes. Mixing tape brands is a no no.

Stephen,
Have you considering using the a firestore drive for capture opposed to tape?
Do you know the price of the firestore drive for the HD100?

Yes, I have considered it. The DR-HD100-40 is now available and has a piggyback holster on the IDX battery as it's mounting spot. There is a short power connector that connects to the IDX's D tap to power it. There are other ways to connect it (physically) to the HD-100 or your belt so that it is unobtrusive and transparent to the camera operation. The DTE hard drive is fed by the firewire port of the camera and simultaneous recording can occur to the tape drive as well as th hard drive which is triggered by the record button on the len's pistol grip (as usual) or the record button on top of the carrying handle.

Another way of going direct to edit is to use an NLE that supports live logging. Liquid will allow you to tether the HD-100 to it's logging tool and work exactly the same way as the DR-HD100-40 but directly into the editing app through the firewire. This is ideal for a corporate shoot where you have room to setup the camera, lights and a laptop. You can do a rough edit right there on the spot.

There are many way's to use these new camera's and they are plenty versitile. The 40GB drive (DR-HD100-40) is available and slowly stocking but the 80GB (DR-HD100-80) has not made it's arrival.

take care Steve...
