HBO Spec Piece

It's a spec piece. It was written, directed, produced and edited by me an my partner Liam, the both of us comprised the directing team Contraband.

Tried to approach HBO to see if they would pick it up, but they don't take outside submissions. Pinching to a couple of other companies to see if there is an interested.

The spot is basically just for my directing reel as of right now.

Very nicely done.

You didn't know that HBO doesn't accept unsolicited content? Just curious, that looked like a lot of work, how long did it take you?

Unfortunately its rare that a studio or network will "pick" something up, they generally don't want to even see it. You are certainly talented. If you produced this knowing that HBO doesn't accept unsolicited content but did it anyway I think that show's tenacity, if you produced this to only learn afterwards then you might want to rethink your strategy...

Sorry, I'm not trying to be a jerk, I have done a lot of work with someone who produces live boxing events for HBO and they always need good producers and directors for the roll ins. Doesn't pay much. Also, he's on the West Coast.

I'm sure he'll like your style so I'll send him a link to your vimeo page. I can't say that he will even reply, he also doesn't like it when friends try to make introductions. I think this work speaks for itself.

Good job.

Sorry, one other suggestion.

I was about to send the link off when I noticed the title "HBO - I Still Have A Soul," great if you produced this for HBO, not so great if you produced it as a spec piece for HBO to revue.

I realize this sounds nit-picky, but if I send this to an HBO producer with this title I think it immediately gives the wrong impression. Kind of like changing the badges on a stock 68 Camaro to SS badges, it only fools them until they look under the hood...

I'd recommend removing the "HBO" from the title of the thread.

Going into shooting we didn't know that HBO didn't accept unsolicited content. We did the piece to build our Commercial Directing reel. The piece was written and done because my partner and I are huge fans of boxing. So we went out and did it for our reel, getting it picked up would have just been an added bonus. The beauty of doing spec work is you get to do what your passionate about. We put all our own money. It took a week to shoot most of the spot. The last part of the spot at the very end where he's walking into the match, and in the ring, we shot a month later, because it took time to get the match set up through a friend.

Thanks again for taking a look, and passing along to your friend. We've already had a nice little write up in Shoot Magazine for the spot. Take a look, it's on page 9.

I thought this was an incredible piece of work. You guys should be very proud. Present this with scripts of the first few episodes and I'd be surprised if you don't sell it. I'd love to see the show. Definitely one I would watch.

as a former boxer myself from gleasons gym in the BK, and huge fan of boxing and HBO series 24/7 etc, I thought this was riveting, goosebump-inducing, and awesome work!
