Hawaii Beach Grabs from Today

Your shots are out of focus. Your levels are wacky. There is zero contrast and the shots are flat and lack punch.

Thats my .02

Generally speaking; Grading looks better. Dont you think?

Anyway; nothing personal. keep shooting!

I do agree that the grading looks alot better, but what am I doing wrong in camera that the shots are coming out so flat and lacking contrast?

In camera; I only see a Focus issue.

Never shoot Auto Focus. Takle control of the camera.

Starting with a Calibrated monitor... In post, use your scopes.

good stuff, kimko. you get an "A+" for Local Speak 101.

and Trunks, back to what John "Spam-I-Am" Hudson was saying earlier, try to steer clear of Autofocus. it's the devil. looking at the pics again, you really jipped that pigeon from getting a quality close up. thanks to you, he'll never work in this industry again.

keep at it though. i'm interested to see what you'll be using the Hawaii landscape shots for in the future.

I should post my screen grabs from Lake Michigan. THEN you would see beauty. (Well, O.K., even John couldn't correct THAT well! Nevermind.)

Just for the hell of it I decided to get out some Florida Keys footage from just a couple months ago and see what sort of grabs I could get out of it. The still images looked great in my NLE, but as soon as I took an actual grab and exported it always looks much flatter, less contrast, less color. I'd love to see some grabs from the more experienced guys like John or anyone else. I'll bet you'll be surprised at how flat and low-contrast the grabs look unless you photoshop 'em.

EDIT: I've seen and made great grabs of normal footage with no touching... I mean distance landscape grabs only.

That's the funny thing, the pigeon looks in focus on my monitor. I wonder if the screen capturing program in Vegas just makes it look like crap. I guess it doesn't considering most of you use Vegas.

I normally don't use autofocus. I manual everything. The only reason I had it on auto is because I was at the beach with my family. These aren't meant to be high quality professional shots. I was just recording a day at the beach with my family.

My wife would have slapped me if every five seconds I was like "Hold still honey, I have to zoom in and focus on you, that bird, etc."

I'm just waiting for the day for John to say something nice about what i post here :embarasse I've never had so many negative comments about my work, till I started posting on this board.

Dude did you check out my post right above? I'm saying that I think it's a landscape/grab issue. Maybe even humidity inbetween the lens and filter? My shots from the Keys look really good on my monitor-out from NLE, but when I took some grabs it was like they went through a contrast/color filter.

The bottom grab has had color and sharpness pumped up a bit.

I hope one of these other guys can post a grab without any photoshop on it... make it a longer distance (no close pigeons) landscape shot, not at golden hour, and let's see how sharp and colorful it appears? I really want to know because prior to PS work my grabs looked a lot like yours and I don't do automatic anything ever. My guess is your grabs looked great at home.

Yeah, I completely agree with you mattin. On my TV, which is what the output is intended for, is outstanding. You can’t please everyone.

I don’t think I have to PS or color correct every single photo I post here. Of course the grabs are going to look flat and bland if I don’t color correct, but they look perfectly fine on monitor without color correction.

By the way, I liked the grabs you posted Mattin. I agree that it has to do something with capturing the grab, I also agree that John should post some uncorrected grabs of his own as well.

John's 1st and 4th screen grab looks like the History of Man museum at Balboa Park to me...

But it could just be the way that he was focusing the camera.

John is that building BALBOA PARK SAN DIEGO or should i ask you where are these shots taken?

So those grabs haven't been touched? Not in Vegas or anywhere else?

S'cuse me while I go outside and smash my DVX to bits with a sledgehammer. I got a bad one.

Ditto.

I swear though I saw these pictures at work and they looked a little flatter, but when I got home they looked a bit nicer. lol
