C300: Having trouble toggling onscreen display C300

I'm having trouble toggling the onscreen display on assignable button no.7 on the handgrip. Other functions such as waveform and colour bars can be selected and displayed OK.
When I select onscreen display, the toggling doesn't work at all, it just stays on as the camera image without the onscreen display.

Other assignable buttons such as nos. 5 and 6 (headphone) can also be assignable to anything other than the onscreen display.
The onscreen display does however toggle on and off on the permanent buttons for this on the side of the camera, and the display itself.

I have done a whole camera reset to no avail.

I use this function on the handgrip all the time to confirm that I am actually recording when I think I am, but I cannot operate with all the other visual clutter in the evf.
Pain in the bum as I'm about to head off for a major shoot tomorrow. Any suggestions?

Just remove the handgrip and fix the cable again properly. Hopefully that will solve the problem. At times that cable becomes loose so that handgrip functions get affected. I hope the LCD menu works so that atleast you can use the button in the LCD. Sorry, Can't think of any thing else without my morning cup of tea. :(

indiawilds is probably right about the cable.

But if you really only use the display characters for checking record status, why not go into the Custom Display and just turn off everything but the record status?

If you want to check camera settings, you can still do it relatively quickly by using the fixed "Status" button.
