alright, first post, here goes. so i went to turn it on this morning, it said the card was not compatible or something, change card. so i did, wouldnt even turn on. tried formattig the first card in camera, wouldnt, reformatted them both on the computer with some software i downloaded, wouldnt work. i even bought a new card, wouldnt turn on with that either. i have ml installed but its been working great for the past few weeks, and my two first cards have also been working just fine. any help? thanks

Please tell the exact error message. It sounds like an issue with your card slot.

Can you turn on the camera without any card? If it doesn't turn on, is there anything displayed in the viewfinder?

Yeah it turns on just fine with no card in it. The exact error is-
"Card cannot be accessed
reinsert/change card or format card with camera"

I only get it with one of my cards, which is a 4 gb class 2 (lol but its actually never failed me in video, got it for free from a friend) sandisk.

Just tried it with the card it turns on with, flashes Err in the viewfinder. I'm going to try it with the card i bought today after it finishes completly wiping it with Roadkil's DiskWipe utility. tried it with the other card, viewfinder works, but also flashes Err, I'm 98% sure I'll get the same retort from my new card.

edit- finished giving the new card a real wipe, it doesn't give me any errors in the viewfinder, and even blinks/ beeps the af confirm, i can change settings such as ISO and aperture and what not, it even autofocuses! but the LCD will not turn on, and i cant take pictures.

Also if it means anything, my sandisk card got like 7000 errors when wiping it, the other one got around 2000, and the new one got a fat zero.

This is the same message I get from my 550D due to slot card wear. If I insert a bus ticket near the card (to push it a bit on the contacts), it works just fine.

If the bootflag is enabled, camera may try to look for an autoexec.bin on the card, and it doesn't find it. You may try removing the bootflag, formatting the cards from the camera, and then installing Magic Lantern again.

See here for an easy way to remove the boot flag:

Sorry I'm probably just tired, but what are you asking me to do? I used eoscard and switched bootdisk to off, also I tried to put ml back on the card, and added magic.disable_bootdiskf = 1 to the script in magic.cfg. I'llhave another look at this in the morning, hopefully I can get it to work. thanks so much for the help, ml is a great software and I hope it's not causing my problems because I'd like to have it on my next cam if this is royally screwed or this if I can fix it.
I also tried the bus card thing with a bit of masking tape on the back of the card, no dice.

The build from my link is able to disable the bootflag from the menu (without requiring manual edit of the config file). EOSCard won't help here.

how am i supposed to install that version of ml without being able to use a card in the camera? can i do it from eos utility or something?

You said:

"I only get it with one of my cards, which is a 4 gb class 2 (lol but its actually never failed me in video, got it for free from a friend) sandisk. "

so I assummed all your other cards work fine...

If the camera can't boot at all... I have no idea right now. What happens if you start with a card prepared for Magic Lantern? (bootable and with autoexec.bin). Is the SD LED blinking sequence any different? (compared with a formatted card)

What happens if you try to format the card from the camera, after getting the error message? (Card cannot be accessed)

Oops sorry i meant thats the only one it turns on with at all...

A card with ml on it gives me nothing on the led, nothing with a plain old card either.

Trying to format the one card that the camera at least turns on with, it starts formatting it, gets almost all the way full on the little status bar, then says it couldn't format it, and to change my card. Attempting to do a low level format freezes the camera, it doesn't fill the progress bar at all.

On another forum, I've been told my camera is bricked :( heres the exact message ive been given-
link-http://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/632389/

"you've bricked your t2i. the only way i am aware you can fix this is put your card in another camera if you have one, if not borrow a buddy's or gf or someone and run a low level format. then put it in your camera and it should boot up, but ML won't be running, so you just need to re-install everything again. this may have happened by accidentally deleting one of the ML files off your card."

If you delete autoexec.bin, the camera won't turn on, but it will display the info in the viewfinder. I did it many times during development. That's all it happens, and it's solved by formatting the card. But your issue is different.

Are you able to clear all the settings from Canon menu? Although it's unlikely to help, but who knows?

It's difficult to tell if the issue is hardware (with the slot reader itself) or software (something wrong in NVRAM). Since no LEDs are blinking, it freezes at the bootloading stage, before Magic Lantern is loaded into RAM.

I'd try with an old FAT16 card (less than 4 GB).

What sequence of LED blinking you get when you start the camera with the card that the camera turns on with? What happens if you install ML on that card?

"Bricked" means it does nothing (no LED blinking, nothing on screen, nothing in the viewfinder). It's not the case here.

I tried clearing the settings from the menu, didn't do anything.

I'm at work right now, i might swing by best buy or something like that to buy a cheapie 2 gb or so card. I'm just glad it's not bricked, and I hope that the smaller FAT16 card can resolve it.

I'll check when I get home to see what it does with the card it turns on with, i think it blinked once or twice, but I'll have to confirm that.

Do you think it'd be under warrenty if it ends up being the card slots fault? What about the NVRAM? It's refurb so it only has a 90 day warrenty, but I still have a month or so on that.

Alright, so I picked up a 2 gb card and it gives me the same story as the 4gb that it turns on with, it gives me a long ish red led, then the screen turns on. although the 4gb gives me a fast red light then turns on. clearng the settings did nothing, but thank god its not bricked.

Is there any difference in blinking when you install ML on that card? If it is, ML may have a chance to run (and you'll be able to disable the bootflag).

The 2GB card is formatted as FAT16, right? (these cards can be formatted either as FAT16 or FAT32).

just noticed while i was installing ml on the one, it gives me a dcim and misc folders on the card, but says theyre corrupt. currently wiping the card then installing ml

Ok so with ml, i get an endless red led going when turned on, no screen, viewfinder works. without it i get either a quick blip of red or a slightly longer red, either way it goes to the error about the card not being able to be read and what not.

Sounds like a hardware issue with the card controller... so probably you should fix it under warranty. Sorry...

One word of advice. Find a way to get the ML bootflag off the camera before sending it in to Canon for warranty service. If they check and find the firmware has been modified they may very well declare your warranty null and void FOREVER!

And there are some circumstances under which Canon will refuse to attempt any repairs even on a paid basis. I would not be surprised if this was one of those.

A1ex, you should help him find a way to be sure his firmware is back to "original" configuration before sending the camera off to Canon.
