Having a Hard time deciding now....5DM2 or 7D for lowlight shots.

Ok, I ordered the 5DM2 But have been researching allot on the 7D and 5DM2 on lowlight and noticed there is a little difference in the lowlight department. Well Since I bought the 5DM2 kit im left with nothing till 2 months from now and then can order my lowlight lens (35mm 1.4). But im now thinking of returning the 5DM2 and get the 7D with the 35mm 1.4 lens and wouldn't have to go on the 5DM2 diet (Instant Noodles). I will be using the camera for night clubs...extreme lowlight.

If lowlight is your priority 5D Mark II is your way to go. Its larger sensor is much better suited for your uses.

T2i and 7D provide 99% the same image quality, second the 7D cost about $600 more. With that extra $600 you could buy a lot of things. Yes the 5d is king , but your talking about a $2400 camera now .

Instead I would just buy a 60d/t2i ( Im selling my t2i ) and invest in a nice fast lens + led light and SAVE some money
The reason I don't want to use LED lights is that I used them on my GH1 and allot of the people were annoyed by it in the nightclubs.

Well thats what I heard on the 7D vs T2i but the lowlight in this footage shows different. Between 13-20 seconds is 7D and T2i. Big Difference in my eyes if you ask me

I think your seeing things, also most LED lights have a dimmer. Set it to half way and shoot away, grab your footage and who cares if you have a couple of people or two who don't like the light. Just edit around it.

You need light if you want good footage, no matter how good these DSLRs are in low light your still going to run into problems if there is no light available.
( I've shot in clubs before )

This was shot with a 5DM2 with no LED light

Canon 50mm 1.2 lens $1459

Canon 5d Mark II $2479

Total = Almost $4k maybe slightly lower if you can find a deal, but your still looking at spending well over $3k for this setup.

In my personal and professional opinion I hope your going to get paid good money for this work, cause if your not just get a 7d,t2i,60d etc. and a small led light + a cheaper lens and save some money.

ps. There's plenty of light where the Dj is in that club scene & that dance floor scene is a look I don't like at all, it's like everyone who does club scenes does the slow motion thing.

Good luck

I shot this with the HMC40 with on camera light and the GH1 with 50mm 1.4 FD lens. The GH1(hacked) was not great in lowlight that I lost allot of my shots and were not publishable.

Thanks
I will probably end up getting a 7D.

i think you really need to pick up an audio recorder (even just a cheap zoom h1) and plug into house audio. a 3 thousand dollar camera and absolutely no audio to back it up really kills it i literally had to mute it.

Seems like you like wasting money, that footage looks good to me. It's a club with no light, what else is it supposed to look like?

Save your money as your footage looks fine.

I would...but like I said the last time we did we lost allot of footage because of lowlight situation. Thank you though
I want the 5DM2 but the 7D might just cut it.
Im just afraid if I get the 5D...then the 5D3 comes out it will be harder for me to sell it and get close what I paid for like in a year.

That footage looked like sh*t in the night club, all soft/shallow focus, handheld, and nothing the 7D couldnt do... personally I have found the 7D able to handle lowlight video way better than the 5D... ESPECIALLY BASED ON WHAT PICTURE STYLE YOU ARE USING... 7D/NIFTY 50 AND YOUR GOOD TO GO. 5D is old news my friend... and so is the 7D you may say... but would you buy an old car for more money, just because its has be bigger engine? I love my 7D and i love the 5D... but there is a reason the 7D is canons #1 selling product....

100% agreed.

Joe if you would like me to shoot some real life low light tonight I can... I broke my nifty fifty (p.s. that whats so great about that lens... I broke it and I dont care... its 90 bucks...) but I do have a tokina 16-50 2.8 just let me know tell me specific things you would like to see... I will shoot standard and marvel cine... the cine makes the grain look veeeerryy film like in comparison to standard

I have both the canon 7d and 5d, with all things being the same (lens shutter iso etc) I would say that the low light capabillities are the same on both cameras. The differences show when you start to crank the the iso. This is where the 5d has the edge. Also note that with the 5d because of the swallow depth of field it will be difficult to maintain focus at f/1.4 and so you will have to stop down to about f4 so any low light advantages over the 7d may be lost. My advice to you is buy the 60d (best all round canon dslr for video) and invest in good fast lenses
