GH2 Have a feeling the 5D Mark III's video quality won't come close to the hacked GH2s

The first time I saw GH2 footage, it was overcrank 720P mixed with Canon footage shot at 1080/30P, and the 720P from the GH2 looked cleaner, clearer than the Canons at 1080. I was blown away, and I've been shooting GH2 whenever possible ever since. (I do weddings and doc-type stuff for broadcast).

I'd love to shoot GH2 as a main camera ALL the time, but I just can't. The killers for me are: no 24-70 (or similar FF equivalent) that is fast, constant aperture, and stabilized; and I can't change ISO while shooting.

The 5DMkIII news is really exciting- it seems to address the main reasons why I love the GH2 so much, but at the price point, it's not going to matter unless I'm completely, as L1N3ARX put it, swept off my feet.

Having said that, I put together a video montage of footage shot on the GH2 for Panasonic's booth at the recent WPPI convention in Vegas (wedding photogs convention). While there, I met with a few of the big-cheeses in marketing and R&D for Panasonic's G Line, and it seems they are committed to making video in the GH2 successor, well, more than just a "happy accident."

I'm in communication with them, and they seem to value my input. I've put together a little wish list for features I'd like to see on the GH3, and would certainly like any of your input on what should be included in this list- here it is:

Ability to change iso while shooting
Ability to change wb while shooting
Have a SOLID red light to indicate "recording" rather than a slow FLASHING light (scary during critical moments when you glance down and you're not sure if your'e recording or not)
Reduce stop/start record gap time
1080/60P
Uncompressed HDMI out
Eliminate or reduce color shift when pressing "record"
A raised center "menu" button (hard to feel those tiny buttons without looking)
ETC mode available when using external monitor
Ability to send on-screen information to external monitor (currently, it disappears)
Ability to switch formats/framerates while using external monitor

Thanks, guys and gals- I appreciate your input.

Rolling Shutter - Fix
DR - Raise
LCD Image accuracy - fix
ISO bug - Fix
720P External Monitoring changes it to 1080/60i recording automagically - fix
Lock Camera Button (locks all settings until switched off) - add
Full Sensor video recording (full size of the sensor, no crop) - add

"720P External Monitoring changes it to 1080/60i recording automagically"

I was unaware of this- I just tested it out. I thought you meant it changed format in the monitor, but actually changes the recorded format- that's nuts!

the 5D mk3 if it has great resolving detail ill think of getting one. although i really prefer the gh2's tiny size. so useful;

- headphone jack
- size up mic jack (less adapters)
- Better, bigger eye piece
- Better audio controls, - control audio levels during recording
- Basically make this more like a video camera without pissing off the broadcast division
- Market the camera better so I don't have to explain to everyone that this camera does shoot great video ("Why did you choose THAT one?" ,"Do you regret buying it yet?")

Gave me a headache.
: D

In a word: editing.
In two: editing & shooting.
In three: editing, shooting & score.
In four... well, let's not discuss taste, it happened the same with me ;-)

Rolling shutter is improved anyway.

Emanuel... Seriously, fix your computer! Maybe call Vitaly for help. Just so something! Or flash the computer with Orion!:Drogar-Love(DBG):

LOL Done. Duplicated posts deleted (a page of them as you could check, before and after your posts). I have no idea what's going on. This starts automatically without I even had added more edits or whatever else in the forum. For example, that 'edit' of my last post mentioned as done 1 hour later, I was not even here then. I've already tried apps, antivirus (avast) to clean or fix any unwelcome situation. It looks like everything is normal. This began when dvxuser software was updated, but apparently I am the only to report this hassle. And now even on reduser the issue is popping up, so I doubt it is anything related to the upgrade, but just a coincidence.

In any case, if anyone has an idea for helping to solve this, please let me know here:

I am all ears.

Sure did. There was some skew but nothing crazy. However I wonder about all of the footage that did not make the cut. :)
LOL As usual, I love your posts... 1st class-trained-eyes-brains! (Cheers, E :-)

EDIT -- New Nikons are putting CMOS to beat CCD in all the fronts! :P

I'm in a similar boat. 7D, canon glass, and I really want to jump ship to the GH2 and buy a set of Nikon glass and a D7000 for photos.

Why the GH2?
- more resolution
- better codec
- "richer" overall image
- 4/3 is close enough to APS-C (not a fan of FF at all)

The 7D has been nothing but a disappointment for my style of shooting (landscape). The moiré is unavoidable with deep focus, rendering all other "advantages" null. Good lighting and support go to waste when everything looks like it came from a Playstation 1. Tack-sharp glass makes it even worse.

The only thing preventing me from ditching my entire Canon rig right now is the fear that Panasonic is going to release something much greater in April. Even then, will the current GH2 hacks be able to transfer over?

righteous - it will likely take Vitally some time to hack the GH3, or whatever Panasonic chooses to call its next top-of-the-line camera. It took him 9 months after the camera was announced to hack the GH2. That said, you can shoot a lot of moire-free landscapes between now and 2013. For $900 right now with the 14-42 kit lens, you really can't go wrong buying a GH2 and shooting with it until the GH3 actually comes out.

Best,

Bill

4/3" format can never equal FF. The larger the better until a certain compromise. To me, 4/3" landscape is much poor if compared with a larger acquisition device. Right, with no aliasing, moiré, muddy softness, etc. 5DIII with the best glass is the best combo IMO. Scarlet and EPIC as the next steps.

Nikons are an interrogation mark as of now. Only future and a quality shootout will clarify.

You're right, 4/3 isn't equal to FF, which is what I love about it. Unless you meant that FF is somehow superior, which would be just plain silly; it's a preference thing. If we ASSUME the 5d3 is moiré-free (not likely), it's still a camera that is over three times the price of a GH2. Yes it is a kick ass photo camera, but what if i don't like FF for photography either? As long as the Tokina 11-16 exists, FF has no wide angle advantages that I can see. Low noise? The D7000 has far less than the 5d2, with the added bonus of being a crop sensor. Best of both worlds!

My point being that if i'm going to depart from an s35 sensor, i'd rather go down a smidge than go up a ton. I don't see how 4/3 can possibly be a hinderance to landscape work? Most of my work is telephoto, so a 4/3 sensor with crop mode is fully welcome. Again, the trade off of a tiny bit of width between the s35 sensor in exchange for no moiré and rich colors is fine by me.

I agree with righteous. It's a preference thing. But if you want "cinematic" DoF, you want to use a sensor that's about the same size as the S35 frame that moviemakers have used for about a hundred years. To my eyes (not saying this is true for anyone else) - 1/4" to 1/2" camcorder sensors are too small -- and FF is too big.

For me, m4/3, APS-C and S35 are in the sensor "Goldilocks zone" - just right :-)
