Hate Citizen Kane? Think The Godfather is overrated? It's okay, you're among friends

Also, I'm sure every member of this forum is capable of giving a film a fair criticism, but again, the thread doesn't ask for it!

I hate scripted reality.
I hate NRA publicity films with gun toting, shooting individuals or product placement movies like "transporter"
I hate comic book remakes
cgi animated cartoons
I love:
the spy who came from the cold
brazil and most of terry gilliams films
french connection
ridley scott - some of his
I like some of the old french noir movies
fellini +1
hitch +1
arthur penn ++1
and lots more
but most of all I like documentaries and of those I prefer the ones with no speaker, the ones who speak by themselves, maybe a little text here and there....

Then what's the point?...I don't even care about fair. Just a little insight into your opinion that's all.

Because it's interesting to see who likes what and who doesn't. Don't contribute if you don't agree!

It's only interesting if you're looking for validation, which I guess is what the original poster wanted. But if you really thought about what you like and don't like, and why, you wouldn't need such validation.

Who cares anyway if 2001 is boring? It's a freaking masterpiece any way you look at it!
In my opinion, the only thing 2001 is a masterpiece of is special-effects.

Character and story are the most important parts of any movie, and 2001 is complete and utter failure at both.

It doesn't engage my heart with emotion. It doesn't engage my mind with thought. It does absolutely nothing for me.

Maybe you should just read books? Films are complicated beasts. Sometimes the story and characters can be pretty basic or formulaic but the visual and aural experience is captivating. Films such as Playtime, Gerry and Heat come to mind.

2001 might not have a story that you engage with but its creation of atmosphere and its visual poetry surely moves you on some level?

If not then it's probably just not "your thing". In music terms it might be like a person saying "how can anyone find Nirvana interesting, it's just noise."

I love 2001 but can accept that it's not a film for everyone. It's cold and cerebral and meditative. The older I get the more I appreciate those qualities. I don't view it as a failure of character and story because clearly, Kubrick did not design it to be a traditional story. It's not like he tried and failed. He was doing something else entirely. But I can see how that would bore someone who prefers a traditional narrative. I love great traditional storytelling. But sometimes I'm in the mood for a film like 2001 or Tree of Life, that I can just kind of groove on and absorb by osmosis.

I dislike just about everything that Kubrick has done. The guy knew how to make a partial flick in a decent way, and he poo pooed the rest of it up. The Shining was a disaster. 2001 - the HAL sequence was the only decent part. The boot camp part of Full Metal Jacket was great, then the rest of the movie was a pile of crap.

What about "The Killing" and "Paths of Glory"?

Do you have an example of a similar movie that does so and why that is?
Well that would depend on what you mean by a "similar movie."

There are multiple Kubrick films that I love, including Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket and A Clockwork Orange. All of which I found to be much more compelling and interesting than 2001. I found the characters to be more interesting, I found the themes to be more thought provoking, and I thought the stories were stronger and more coherent.

If you are referring to sci-fi, the list is basically endless, though Gattaca is probably my favorite sci-fi.

If you are referring to slower paced films, I love most Terrence Malick films (though I was not a huge Tree of Life fan, of which I found the characters' voices to be unrealistic), I love many of Wong Kar Wai's films, I love Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring by Ki-duk Kim (which is significantly slower than 2001 though far more interesting to me). All of these films are far more in touch with basic human emotion than 2001.

In fact there are many foreign films that are just as slow if not slower than 2001, yet manage to stay engaging throughout... something which I believe 2001 fails at.

I love (synonyms: adore, enjoy, relish, appreciate) how this thread just proves how subjective film is. This is why you can never depend on film festivals (or even "critics" for that matter) because there's no rubric. Even filmmakers themselves have major differences in opinion (as proven).

Here's another overrated film of mine: Drive (2011). My justification: I went into it under the impression that it should have won the Oscar (people were literally saying this). It was average, and mediocre at most. The plot felt copied and pasted. I never connected with the protagonist at any level, and could care less. For all intents and purposes, it was Rambo in a car. On a more positive note: it was shot well (although I find that I'm saying this way too much these days).

And, although I consider it off-topic, my top 5 favorite films for the haters (in no particular order, because you can't give preference):
- Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind
- The Royal Tenenbaums
- Barton Fink
- Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
- Memento
