Hasselblad H6D - Medium Format, 4K raw video

Raw proprietary 4K (uhd) through use of hasse app phocus. Out to prores 444.
but no info on how much or what area of the sensor is being used?
the leica S shoots HD video using the entire 30x45mm sensor but 4K is a S35 window...the leica S is a 37mpix sensor 16bit, 15stops DR but not a sony sensor...

Those cameras record into 12 and 16 bit containers it doesn't meant that that is what they capture - any more than recording a c100 at 10 bit makes the file actually 10 bit.

my own experience of mfdb stills is that the files are a bit special. Often the fancy AF of Dslr makes those pictures make the edit however

It says on the official site:
MEDIUM FORMAT LOOK

"The narrow depth-of-field associated with medium format cameras gives an unrivalled look and bokeh to your footage."

This is not true.. I did extensive tests to find out before I sold my hasselblad.

(ok it is true if you interpret the word 'associated' carefully)

Simply sensor size, Fstop FOV and distance mathematically come together to create DOF.

AKA

MF 80mm at 2.8 looks basically the same as Fullframe 50mm F2 or S35 35 1.4

So creating (narrow) DOF it is all about the lenses you can buy and how sharp they are at given Fstops

A typical MF 80 at 2.8 does perform better than a S35 1.4 but it doesnt have to.

Overall Im a massive fan of large chips I think me (and arri) have realised that there is a limit to the quality available from small pixels - simply there is a physical limit to how many photons they can catch.

Glasswise small chips require a high DPI of resolution.

So Im very keen on FF and MF video.

This hasselblad.. I cant see it not having some gotchas.. missing SDI and TCin for starters.

I assume Arri are not idiots.. and the size of their 'mini' camera is the size it is (larger than a hassy) for a reason.. doubtless dissipation of heat.

So there is bound to be an engineering trade off on the hassy design, noise framerate, overheating cut-outs or something.

The difference in IQ is not caused by the amount of bits. Sony could easily output into a 16-bit container and still look worse.

True. I also ran this kind of tests, here.
And it's much easier to find good f/1.4 full frame glass than good f/1.8 medium format (45x30mm) glass.

The bigger sensor does give you higher resolution, everything else equal, but for video I already have enough resolution, and that "everything else equal" is far from common (my RX100 IV does a full sensor read and proper downsampling, this MF cameras will probably do line skipping).

The point was that it is not cropping, it is full sensor... Let's not get bogged down with focal lengths and other snooze fests.

It is a MF hasselblad shooting 4K raw with beautiful colours and skin tones that are unrivalled, imho.

An eralier poster quoted hassy PR about the unique look of MF.

I don't think there is one - or not specific to the DOF/Sensor size characteristic anyway.

I do however agree that MF stills are often fantastic and the huge pixels help this.

As for the video I think we will see it when we see it.

Somehow Im doubting such a small camera can beast the Alexa Mini or the Alexa65.

Well, yea.. It is marketing hype, for the most part... but... You can get F2 MF lenses at various focal lenses (if you have alot of cash!)... If you cannot get an equivalent FF lens, then that MF look becomes unique.

H system lenses fastest is 100 2.2 most are in the 3.5 region..

I did own an H system for a while so might know about them (and their sh1tty AF etc).. and apart from anything some of the lenses fell apart.. they did not have a feel that equated with their prices.

Well done you... but the point still stands... The argument only holds up when there is an equivalent lens available.

Absolutely.. and mostly the argument works the other way.. ie it is hard to get narrow DOF with a wide FOV and an S35 sensor.

In principal I think FF and MF sensors will (by physical definition) best S35 sensors for high quality images.

In terms of my ownership.. I sold the system after a lot of consideration of it versus high end nikon DSLR kit (for stills) which took a small hit on ultimate quality in exchange for a huge leap in usability.
