Has anyone used the external Panasonic mic?

I had some posts up about this and researched it pretty heavily about a month back. My suggestion is to get the Rode Videomic. It sounds far better than the Panasonic. The Panasonic, from what I've heard (audio) and read, just give the camera a farther reach but not much better quality (they almost sound identical). The Rode on the other hand gives farther reach, better quality and is more pinpoint on subject.

Trust me, go with the Rode. The size kinda sucks, but it's not too large once it's on camera and shock mount works well.

i like the mono idea, for front of cam dialog and such...if i wanna hear the birds and the freeway, i'll record separate audio with an h4n or something.

The sennheiser mic i about $200 which is about $70 more than the Rode. Honestly, stereo versus mono with the onboard mic of the Gh1 makes no difference. You not going to get great audio recording into the GH1. It should only be used for run-and gun situations with dialogue. The Rode video mic is the best "low cost" solution.

And does it work well with the GH1 and produce better audio?

As it's an MS design, it has a forward-facing capsule (as well as capsules facing direct left and right in effect) which is all you will hear if you mix it to mono, if working with dialog rather than ambience, so that's an advantage.
