And as much as he may be right on some of the merits, he does himself no favors by being an Olympic-caliber d*****bag about it.

And yeah, I've read his City script, like millions of others -- Harlan, it wouldn't have worked for the show. TV writers get rewritten. Deal with it.

Olympic sized douchebaggery is his specialty...I believe he is doing this now because the new film supposedly uses an element from his City on the Edge of Forever script (the time travel portal).

You are standing up for the studio's using Ellison's work in whole or part without compensation? Yikes !!
 
Damned by faint praise for the merits I'd say.

Those kind of statements tend to color whatever facts they bracket.
 
Harlan doesn't do anything - and I mean anything, like passing the salt or handing someone a paperback - without being a world-class douchebag about it.

C'mon, he's Harlan. It's just his nature. And people put up with it because, well, he's Harlan and after all that's just his nature.

The degree to which his cause is right or wrong (although I'm inclined to side with him on this one) is almost beside the point.

OK. Well, having read all the legal instruments involved, I'm sure you can give us a detailed account of the strength of those merits, right? :beer:

I'm saying what Max said -- the "merits" are beside the point. He's one of the biggest jerks on the planet, right or not. When he says himself that his motivation IS that decades-long grudge and his lust for the money involved, it's pretty hard to ennoble his plight, even if he's legally correct.
 
Although it remains true that the merits of his case are not impugned by the fact that it happens to be Harlan who's bringing it.
 
Just saw the feature documentary about Ellison " Dreams with Sharp Teeth". Angriest guy in the world. Type A+++++ He broke the back of a studio exec, phones in death threats to other sci-fi writers and screams at pedestrians in L.A. Good thing he doesn't carry a gun and only uses his mouth!

Harlan is walking proof of the truth of the old adage: The tongue is the deadliest of all blunt instruments.
 
Writers so often have good reason to be angry...I really have to watch that documentary.

But hey, come to think of it, no matter how badly behaved he is, he's really just making up for all the silent, abused and helpless writers who are exploited every day. He's phoning in death threats on behalf of all of us! So I guess I say, "Go Harlan!"

When James Garner and Don Johnson fight for lost royalties nobody hears about it. When Harlan goes for it people in the Andromeda galaxy hear about it. Besides, he figures if George Lucas can milk the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises FOREVER, he might as well do it with "City on the Edge of Forever"

I remember hearing about some Star Wars comic or some tie-in story, can't remember exactly where, but basically it was something about how Han Solo and Chewie crash on Earth. The Big Foot myth starts with Chewie and somehow Han Solo is the ancestor of Indiana Jones.

I think Harlan's rants are not so bad now after reading this.
