hi all:

I presently use a dvx100 system for production and post. I am studying the posibility to up to hvx200.

My setup for post now is the following:

JVC 3000 deck for capturing
JVC high resolution NTSC monitor
1 TB array for storage/editing
G5 2x2.0
Mbox/Protools/mixer
FinalCut HD

Question:

what would be a similar setup to be able to work with the HVX200 ?

thanks for the help.

The only thing you'd have to do is upgrade from FCP-HD, which does not do DVCPRO-HD, to FCP 5.1, which handles the P2 workflow really well. Also, make sure you have at LEAST 2 Gigs of RAM, if not more.

I disagree. FCP 4.5 does indeed have dvcpro-HD support. IT has presents for 1080i, 720P, etc. Thererfore your software will work just fine.

FCP 4.5 has DVCPRO HD support (that's where the HD came from). However, the question is P2 support and you really need to be at FCP 5.1.x for proper acquisition and editing of P2 footage.

I should have been more clear, FCP-HD doesn't have the P2 import window. It's the MXF format you'll have problems with in FCP-HD. It doesn't have the Frame Rate Converter, I'd REALLY push upgrading to 5.1, as Ned states.

hmmm...still in the begining stages of HD capture, but I'm running 4.5 and capturing p2 footage just fine. I captured a 720 24p file with no problems. What exactly makes 5.1 better?

You may be able to capture DVCProHD from the DV port, but you cannot open MXF containers on a P2 card or FS-100.

DCV pro HD - P2

DCV pro HD - P2

Although 5.1x has a better viewer for screening P2 footage before importing, you can import from P2 using FCP 5.0.4.

Cheers

I have to chime in and say that the 5.1.2 P2 Import window is a MUST HAVE for dealing with P2 footage.

Yes, you can import P2 footage using FCP 5.0.4. However, there is a known bug with rendered footage in 5.0.4, making the 5.1 upgrade essential for proper editing of P2 material.

Yes upgrade to 5.1.2 before dec 31st.
Also one thing that hasn't been mentioned is monitoring. If you wish to monitor HD footage on an external broadcast monitor you will need a HD monitor and a Kona or decklink card to get the footage out of the computer and to the monitor.

thanks

thanks

Thanks for all the input...

so far, what is different is the HD monitor and card/kona...which in itself runs at about 6 K for both...

what about speed when edting...does a double processor mac handle the editing online adequately...or it is necessary to work offline?
