ALL: Hard Case

Does anyone know of a good hard case for the 130/160/250 that would also be allowed as a carry on? I know there are soft cases but I'm having trouble finding a hard case. I don't just want a soft case just in case there is no room and the bag has the be checked.

I bought one strong tough case for my HMC150 at Fleet Farm. It is like a Menards type of a store. It is a tool box, and then lined it with half inch blue foam. The camera fits snug and is safe. The 130 is a little to big for the one I have, but I will return to Menards and see if I can find a tool box that fits. Check out the hunting department for cases too.
I will let you know when I find something. Keep us informed too.

The camera cases that Digital Juice sells are not hard cases, but they have very rigid construction and would stand up better than most luggage.

That being said, the best protection you'll get might be the Thermodyne shipping case (B&H sells it) which is custom-fitted to the AC160/130. It'll handle most anything.

Short of that, get a Pelican case and cut some foam to fit your gear. The Pelican solutions would probably be cheaper than the Thermodyne (usually runs $300+) but you gotta cut your own foam.

That would be scary. :) What about making sure you check in early to be sure you are allowed to carry it on?

That would definitely be the goal. I will usually pay the extra fee to make sure that I get on the plane early. But I also travel enough to know that inevitably there will be times where you cannot control when you get on the plane (running late, plane transfer runs late, plane is a smaller commuter jet that does not allow carry-ons) so I need something that can banged around. I am looking at this one:

It may not fit in many airlines overheads, but I think it will protect the camera well and it is close enough to a carryon size that I could probably at least get to the gate with it to gate check it rather than check it as regular luggage.

Portabrace has a very similar one. Pelican does not really have anything this size (the 1510 I own and is too small I think) The molded Panasonic case will ultimately be the best protection but I have not seen any indication as to the size that it will be.

Portabrace (and HPRC - same thing) cases are very good. I've had a couple of different ones and never a problem. Has a spot to use TSA locks if necessary.
