AC130: Happy to say, I just ordered!

I am so happy: I an hour ago I ordered my brand new AG-AC130 to replace my DVX100. I had a crush on the HMC151 for the last four years and I thought I would buy a secondhand one once I could afford it. But then those AC90/130/160 things appeared. And money I saved for the last fifteen years came available. Didn't want the 90 and couldn't afford the 160. Only not having the VFR is something I feel slightly sad about. But then again: that wasn't on my beloved DVX100 either.

Now I am ordering Barry Green's book.

Happy guy.

Now that you have had a little time to own it how do you lke your new camera? Your post sounded a lot like me (I bought two Sony V1U's just before the 150 came out and wished I had been able to get the 150). The 130 sounded like my dream camera but then all of the bad buzz about the autofocus scared me off. We have been spoiled by a very fast and accurate autofoucs in the Sony V1U's and while I know it is not the cool thing to do but we use the autofocus a lot in our wedding videography. Curious to see what your experience is with the autofocus.

After some weeks of using it, I honestly can say that I am in love with the camera. Barry Green's book just got in, so I have been doing things a little 'better' since a week. Before that I just started using it and learned some by doing some...

I have not used the autofocus though. What I did notice was that the auto iris sometimes acts like the autofocus. (Me scratching my head: the autofocus is off and still is notice the camera doing something that shifts the focus a little.) So now I have turned off auto-iris as well. Like I should have been doing :).

The getting to know the AC130 feels a lot like the getting to know my dvx100. But that's an emotional thing I suppose.

Good luck. You have joined the pro. ranks using only manual. Use your focus assists such as peaking and utilize zebra stripes.

BTW: I just used the new XA20 by Canon. Not even close to the picture quality of the 130.

Well done with the camera, Jasper. I've had my AC130 for about 5 months now, after owning a series of this level of pro cameras (VX2100, Sony V1, Panasonic HMC41, Sony NX70). It's the best camera I've ever owned, with very little to complain about.

The lens is head and shoulders above the other cameras I've owned, even at full telephoto it's pin sharp from side to side - try that with some of the smaller lens cameras. There's very little in the way of Chromatic Aberration either. I've used this camera more intensively than any of my other cameras too, it's a pleasure. Plus it looks a lot cooler than you think at first. :)

As an example, I spent 14 hours filming with it on Friday and 7 hours on Saturday, and not one camera issue in all that time. If only I'd brought the shoulder support with me though!

If you have any questions about the camera Jasper, this is the place to ask. Barry's book is a super starting point too, it should be compulsory reading.
