Hands on Review of the New 70D Camera

Looks like Mr. Blunty is quite taken with this new Canon 70D camera...

Canon 70D Review + Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens preview

Thanks for that link...from what I see in that video Im also quite taken already:)
I know for some people AF in video is something like a taboo...but Im not one of them...I ve been pulling manual focus all that time with my DSLRs, quite successfully I can say, but when you re running n' gunning,
when you re following movement and when you re covering live events eventually you ll miss a few shots...
Well...if that thing is working like I see in the video...Im gonna use it to death!!!
I know...I know...AF is not ''pro''...ok...so I will be an amateur with razor sharp focus footage...thats ok by me:)
Another thing I noticed is the digital zoom! If it is as usable as the crop mode in my 600D...well that is also huge because that is a feature that canon took away from the other models...
Lastly...if it is even a little better in low light than the current (not FF) models, which is likely due to the new sensor...then Im starting to jump from now...!!!
Sorry for the big post...like Mr. Blunty...Im excited:)

With that Sigma lens, I can't couldn't imagine a focus puller doing any better. Very smooth. And very sad that there is no headphone jack. Sigh.

AF as a NO NO will be a thing of the past. Focus pullers should start expanding their skill set. I'm sure it was a preconceived notion that you needed a buggy whip if you wanted your carriage to move faster. When the car was invented, I'm sure people gradually thought "Maybe I'll just leave the buggy whip at home."

You re right, especially for a model with new features targeted to video...a headphone jack should have been included...but hey...dont forget...this is Canon...something important MUST be missing:)
Anyway Im sold even without the headphone jack...and that sigma...another must have...!

I'm guessing that the headphone jack is reserved for the 7D Mk2 when it arrives next year.

Well, since they just killed all future 7D sales with this 70D announcement 2+ months ahead of its release, you'd think there would be a 7DII announcement in August rather than just let the 7D whither on the vine for 6 months. Only someone completely uninformed would buy a 7D at this point.

I will definitely be picking one of these up, along with a 7DmkII (assuming it has the new autofocus plus additional video features). I honestly prefer the autofocus over higher resolution. The 70D + 18-35 f/1.8 + Movi is going to be a hell of a combo.

Edit: And if this thing gets a raw magic lantern hack, I'd be pretty much set.

Problem is the 7DmkII probably will not have a rotating LCD screen. They're always going to leave out some video feature that the cameras really shoud have.

I don't know about that auto focus. It hunted back and forth on every single change. The new Panasonic G6 doesn't ever hunt and you surely can't see it do that at all on the small screen. That video shows something radically different than what I was expecting.

The video did show that the 70D has a 3-10x zoom function like the T3i !!!! That could be a game changer for me to keep all my Canon lenses if the low light, moire, aliasing and sharpness in video mode are improved.

I'm more than ever interested in seeing what the 70D will do for video quality.

Cheers,
Pete

They need to get it out of their heads that photographers are dragging their cameras through the mud. Omitting the flip screen on the 7DII would be a huge mistake just to gain better weather sealing.

When I watched (it may be corrected now) the sides were mislabeled. The 60D hunted, the 70D didn't. I use the autofocus on my GH3 and this seems like a huge improvement.

Many photojournalists are dragging their cameras through the mud, hurricanes and even worse, wars. Weather sealing is essential for many photographers.

Well, Panasonic considers the GH3 to be weather sealed I think. I would suggest that Canon get over it and figure out how to seal a cam with a flip screen because trust me, if anyone needs a flip screen, it's photographer in a war zone. Personally, I'd take my chances with the weather to gain a flip screen. How many times have I see photojournalists shooting blind while holding their cam over their head in a crowd. Not a problem with a flip screen. I've abused some cams in the rain that were in the consumer category. They still seemed to be okay.
