handheld interview microphone

need to shoot some interviews for a new type of project. I will have people interviewing others in the project. need a decent mic that the reporter can hold. I have a rode ntg2 on my canon xha1 but I don't think that it would do well for this as it picks up side noise pretty well and this will be in a busy room with other people chatting.

so what would be a decent mic with xlr connection (to hook up to a1) that would work for this? im thinking around $100 budget for it. TIA

Shotguns are no good because of the handling noise. I have used a sennheiser md 42 and it worked great for that application

You really should start with the Audio 101: Read This First sticky, especially THIS POST in that thread. This question has been discussed a few times here, and those posts will point you to the answers.

That said, unless you have a faulty NTG-2, it should NOT be picking up sound from the sides. The whole principle of the shotgun mic is that it rejects from the sides. Also, shotguns can be effectively used as handhelds.

Alex, what about the handling noise? That Sennheiser I mentioned was recommended for that reason. I would think that the handling noise on a shotgun would be too much.

The standard reporter mic in NA is the Electro-Voice re50n/d-b. In Europe, a Sennheiser MD 42 is more common. You'll see these mics all over the TV news. To say they are tried and true is an understatement. And there are thousands of them out there, so you should be able to find them on the used market without much trouble.

Both are omni-directional mics. You'll want this for two reasons. First, lack of proximity effect. Second, for directional mics of any level, you have to train your talent how to use the mic -- to maintain correct distance from the speakers mouth, and to keep the mic aimed at the mouth (not let the speaker wonder off axis). OTOH, anyone can use an omni with reasonable results.
