Halo Effect Showing Up In Footage

At the 5 second mark you can see my dog run to the left side of the screen and if you look, you can see the large tree behind her all of a sudden glow white when she passes in front of it on screen.

I've been noticing this happening on my camera recently.

I'm using a Panasonic HMC40, but I'm also using the Letus35mini on my camera as well. I haven't done enough testing with it to notice if it's because of the Letus adapter or if it's because of the sensor on my camera.

If anyone has any clue as to what might cause this let me know please!

A few questions to perhaps help you pin it down:

1. It almost looks like a compression issue. Is it visible on the original footage straight out of the camera?

2. Enabling DRS can produce halos, but this looks a little different from that. Just the same, is DRS on?

3. Can you reproduce this effect consistently? That will help when testing different possible causes.

4. The Letus and/or the lens might be the culprit. The obvious way to rule that out is to shoot without the Letus adapter and see if the halo effect is still there. It's possible the lens that you are using is prone to blooming. Sometimes stopping down the iris reduces the blooming.

I did have DRS enabled all the way to 3! That may be it. I'll double check and put the card back in the camera and check to see if I can figure out all your other points ASAP and I'll get right back to you!

Ah, yes. That's probably it then. As I understand it, DRS selectively brightens the darker areas of an image (like your black dog) by applying gain to those regions. However, it's not very precise and some of that brighting will "spill over" to adjacent areas, creating bright halos around dark regions.

DRS can be a useful tool if your scene has too much contrast to be handled normally, but I always treat it as a weapon of last resort, best used sparingly.

DRS can cause problems, I never use a setting of 3. In general, I avoid using it because I get great video without it.
