10/31/10 in downtown Santa Cruz, CA. Some friends and I went and walked Pacific Ave, where people always go all out for Halloween every year. The street is closed to vehicular traffic on Halloween. Children walk the ave that afternoon and trick or treat at the local businesses, but after dark things become nuts when people of all ages come out, most of them intoxicated by some thing or another.

I used my Fat Gecko car mount as a chest stabilizer and I think it worked really well. All of this is shot handheld, no post stabilization. It allowed me to get static shots and some simple camera moves really nicely without a tripod. In particular my favorite shot (1:13 guy in camo with drum) has a nice little tilt up that I really wouldn't have been able to do naked handheld. I also could hold the the thing above the crowd (opening shot.)

There is some banding present in certain shots and I knew I was risking it but the camera was totally capable of shooting in this light (there were huge floodlights set up, although I've shot on this street before in normal lighting with no problems.) I could've easily gotten two stops more performance out of the camera had I shot 1080/24p with a 1/30th shutter, but I really wanted the 1/125th slow motion look, and was willing to sacrifice a bit of image quality to get it (in terms of light but also because it meant shooting 720p.)

Hope you enjoy! Feel free to leave a comment or question here, or on vimeo, and be sure to "like" on vimeo.

Music is "Fifty On Our Foreheads" by White Lies from their album "To Lose My Life." Song is edited for time (some repetition in instrumental verses removed, and it starts late and ends early.)

Logged in just to say that I found this amazing. A magical atmosphere, with everyone having a great time. The picture quality is phenomenal. Well done!
