GH13 Hacked GH1 in NTSC mode shows 29.97fps instead of 24fps???

Hi guys,

I have a PAL gh1 which I hacked and have been using in PAL mode for a while.

However, I want to get a gh2, but since it doesn't do 25p at a high bitrate, I wanted to try my gh1 in 24p mode first, to see if it works in my NLE (premiere cs5), and on my TV.

So today I switched to NTSC, reformatted my card and shot some footage. When I played it back on my TV it seemed fine, but when I took it into Premiere and AE it said it was 29.97 fps, even though it looked like 24p.

I remember somewhere about 'telecining' or something, is that what's happening?

My main questions are:

*What timeline should I edit the footage in? 24fps or 29.97fps?
*What shutter speed should I set to for 24P? It doesn't have 1/48, so is 1/50 the best or 1/60?
*When I get the gh2, does it matter if I get the PAL or NTSC version, and will I still get the 29.97fps with it?

THANKS

The GH1 footage is recorded to an interlaced wrapper, so you need to perform pulldown on it to edit it properly. I recommend Neoscene for speed and quality. You can also use the hack to make it record directly to progressive frames, but it sometimes crashes on extremely detailed scenes with a super sharp lens. What's nice about the GH2 is that it records without the need for pulldown. If your computer and NLE can handle it, you can edit directly from the camera.

1/50 shutter is pretty much indistinguishable from 1/48th, so I wouldn't worry about that. Some recommend 1/60th so you don't get moving bands in your shot from cheap fluorescent lights (this is for US users at least).

You can use the GH13 in 24p mode, if not, use neoscene as Trucci suggests. Neoscene produces excellent results and is easier to edit on older hardware, or if you have a lot of tracks. You will see more difference in lenses than in the cameras, both are good cameras. My current fave combo is the GH13 plus the Olly 45mm: sharpness, contrast, DOF and very low noise.

* If you have CS5 or CS5.5, you can set the Premiere Sequence frame rate to 23.976. Premiere will deinterlace the footage for you.
* Use 1/60 if you live in the USA, Japan, or anywhere the power line frequency is 60hz. Use 1/50 where the frequency is 50hz.
* It doesn't matter once you hack the GH2. Here's how telecine works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecine
