Hacked GH" and Elinchrom D-Liter RX4 Studio lights problem

Hi All i know this is mainly a video forum but i need your help. - feel free to place the post in the correct forum ifs its not supposed to be here.

I own 2 GH2's both hacked with I Powells Flomotion V2.02 firmware.
I recently purchased the following elinchrom light kit. - Elinchrom D-Lite RX 4/4 To Go Set. from an irish photographic supplier based in Dublin.

My problem is as follows, My Digital camera is as stated a Panasonic GH2. I cannot get the included EL-Skyport Transmitter SPEED to work wirelessly with my GH2.
Last night I brought the lights to my local camera club of which I am a committee member. There I have verified that the EL-Skysport Speed transmitter (that accompanies the light set) works as it should (wirelessly fires the RX4’s) when placed onto the hot shoe of several (7) canon cameras and 2 Nikon cameras and a Fujifilm FinePix S1000fd, and about 6 different Panasonic cameras – all of these worked flawlessly.

I got a lend of a hot shoe to PC port adaptor to see if it would let the Skyport Transmitter SPEED work wirelessly with my GH2, I placed the Speed into the hot shoe PC adaptor and used the Elinchrom PC included cable to connect the Speed to the hotshoe’s PC port. I then placed the entire assembly on my GH2 and it still would NOT wirelessly fire the lights (the test button on the EL-Skyport SPEED trigger sets off the lights just fine BTW). I then proceeded to take the hot shoe to PC adaptor and connected EL-Skysport SPEED transmitter assembly and I then placed it on the several canon cameras and a few Nikon cameras and panasonic cameras that I had previously successfully triggered the lights with (with just the EL-Skysport SPEED Transmitter speed alone) all of these cameras successfully fired the lights just fine.

I also went to a friend’s local Photo studio and used my GH2 with his Bowen light setup that were all wirelessly controlled by a Kenro wireless trigger and receiver system – the gh2 worked perfectly when I placed the Kenro hot shoe trigger on the GH2’s hot shoe.

HOWEVER If I use the hot shoe to PC adaptor on my camera and connect the long (20-25 foot) PC (cable which came with the kit) to the remote port on the back of one of the D-lite RX lights it WILL fire the lights just fine when I press on the GH2’s shutter button.

So to summarize.
My hot shoe to PC port adaptor (which I borrowed) seems to work (verified by hard wiring it directly to the D-lite RX remote port.
The EL-Skyport Transmitter SPEED works wirelessly with Canon, Nikon panasonic and Fujifilm cameras. (Just not my 2 GH2's)

I cannot seem to get the Skyport to work with my Panasonic GH2 cameras (I have 2 btw). Whether it’s in “normal” or “speed sync” mode. – the hot shoe fitting is fine I>E> correctly seated (when I connect the transmitter speed to the hot shoe the camera indicated that a flash unit is attached (I.E. it sets max shutter to 1/160 sec –which is the default for the gh2 when used with standard non ttl flash units not equipped with a High speed Sync function)

I know the set works if I hard wire one of the D-lite RX lights to the PC port hotshoe adaptor BUT I DO NOT want to have to use the cable (for safety, & convenience reasons). And I also do not what to have to rely on firing my GH”’s built in flash and utilizing Flash sensor on the back of both D-Lite RX units.

Has anyone on the forum who has a hacked GH2 ever successfully used the elinchrom D-lite rx 2 or 4 with the skyspeed transmitter -

MORE important,y the supplier seems to think that because the gh2 has been hacked - using Flow Motion v2.02 firmware from the amazing I-Powell, - that this is the cause of the problem. any ideas from I Powell as to weather the hack could be causing the problem? - BTW i have already tried reloading the original panasonic firmware and verified that in "movie mode" I had no access to ISO serrings above 3200 ISO. - BUT this still would not remote fire the lights though the EL-Skypoty Speed unit.

I hope that some of the forum members may be able to shed a bit of light and may be able to provide me with a possible solution so that I may get my GH2 cameras to work wirelessly (out of the box) as it should.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kindest Regards

I think you've encountered one of those situations where hot shoe mounted wireless "trigger" won't "play nice" with specific camera brands. The "hack" likely has nothing to do with it (as you've found out). What I did with my original Canon Digital Rebel (300D) was to use a shoe mounted Canon dedicated SunPak flash with the flash in Manual, the output "dialed" all the way down, and head tilted up at the cieling or head aimed at a wall if held in portrait orientation.

That way I let the slave triggers on the lighting units fire them off.

I know you say you don't want to do this, but I think it's what you have that will work.

Hi Bruce thanks for the reply - its not a case of the trigger not playing nice with my camera brand (Panasonic) i have tried the trigger with about 6 other Panasonic cameras that have hot shoes and they all worked flawlessly
thanks for the quick reply though.

would be interested to hear from I Powell as to weather the hack he perfected could some how be effecting the wireless trigger???

thanks again for reply.

Hi TheDingo - yes indeed they work with various flashes including a Metz 58 AF-2 and a wireless transmitter set made by Hahnel - which allows for off camera manual flash usage.

thanks for the reply

a quick and easy test is to revert back to original firmware. i think it has got to do with adapter and pins than firmware. I gave up on finding a wireless flash solution for the gh2 long ago because no one was interested in lumix bodies.

Hi I did indeed revert back to the original firmware on both gh2's but they still did not work.

I found a solution in using a SMDV hot shoe safe adaptor (contains electronics to protect hot shoe from high voltage hot shoe trigger voltage. This is seems to trigger the remote just fine.

Anyway weather or which these kind of remote 1 pin triggers are made to work on ALL camera that have a standard hotshoe (Sony hotshoes need an adaptor).

These type of triggers don't support TTL. this is why they are more or less universal.
