Hacked firmware - what are the pros and cons?

I've currently got an unhacked GH1 - bought in mid 2010. So now that i read that it can be hacked - should i?

I'm using it only for family movies - if i don't pan - the video shots are outstanding - I can lock the focus and the creamy bokeh makes it look like a real movie. But once i pan the video becomes jerky and stutters. What part of the hack firmware will allow a nice pan to look great?

Plus won't all these increased mbit rates also increased the file sizes?

Are there any disadvantages of the hack firmeware?

The main disadvantage, as I see it, is that the camera can crash and you have to restart it, or file spanning will not work on long videos. The advantage is that your video looks better, and if you use native 24p (more likely to crash) you save a lot of time in post because you don't have to convert the video. I would start with one of LPowell's hacks, eith the high reliability or the Blackout-Powell 24p, and take it from there. There are lots of possibilities. The higher bitrate will help with the panning, but if you see lots of problems it could be something else, like the tripod head or image stabilization.
