H.264 conversion

I know it's been discussed hundreds of times on threads here but my searching skills must not be up to par. I'm looking for the best tool for converting H.264 files to something more NLE friendly. I am using Vegas and I do have TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress and don't know if that would be good at all or what to convert to. Any advice or tools you use would be helpful. thanks.

Ok two votes for Streamclip which is awesome because it's free, but like I stated I do own TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress and I would imagine that can do this too? My other question is what format to edit in (or what is your preferred format?)

Edit: Also, what do you export it in from Streamclip? Settings?

I know I'm not that retarted but I can't seem to see or figure out how to get ProRes422 as an option to export.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Sorry should have mention that... Mac. I read before that the stopped with the upgrade for PC because of that I got a mac and I still don't have that option. I am very confused, I don't know.

after you've dragged your file to be converted into Streamclip, click File > Export to Quick Time ....then for Compression type - scroll to Apple ProRes 422 > .......

Sorry again I have failed twice, I have a mac and downloads mpeg streamclip and it doesn't give me a option to export to apple prores 442 or any HD codecs.

any thoughts on why this is like this? is there a plug-in package that I need to download to get these options?

Thanks Vince K but I still don't see that compression type.

Jester2138 is that it is that I'm experience... see I just got my iMac because I couldn't convert to 422 with my pc so I'm still waiting on a copy of FCP

I have download both the 1.9.2 & 1.9.3b2. I asked a buddy who has it and he said that he just d/l the application and it works great with all apple codecs.

Streamclip does not come with the ProRes codec. It is only able to read the codec if it is installed on the machine.

reallY?
I did not know that.
So Streamclip will only read the codecs that are installed on my computer?
I appreciate the heads up....

really wierd... I just installed FCP7 and now I have the compression 422 and all that good stuff but now it has an .mov error. i thought it was just the new compression types but I tried with the standard types and it still doesn't work. I have reinstalled and still nothinng.

Has anyone else experience this issue? I think its just bad luck with me and mpeg streamclip.. :)
