guerilla 35

Barry, having just built a pretty-mediocre home built adapter, I've learned a lot about these things and have a few suggestions for your comparison which would heavily influence my decision regarding which I'll buy. I don't want to be too demanding or ask for stupid stuff, so you can totally ignore this if you want, though:

Grain would theoretically be much more apparent on high definition video. So if we could possibly see a grain comparison (SLR lens at f4 or something) with a high-definition camera or a dSLR or something pointed at an overexposed uniformly white surface, I think it might be quite revealing. Testing the M2's ground glass in both static and rotating positions would also be interesting.

Contrast is clearly an issue for these adapters. On the plus side, they seem to diffuse highlights as can be seen with the "vacation footage". On the negative side, ground glass has a tendency to totally wash out dark areas. Certainly the original micro35 produced some washed-out imagery, as does the mini35 to a lesser extent. I'm curious about this, since it REALLY effects how the image looks and what type of color correction is necessary.

Also, a stress test with the SLR lens at f16 or f22 or something would be pretty revealing. Vignetting and grain would be huge issues at these apertures, and any flaws would be glaringly obvious.

Lastly, the quality of the achromatic diopter is obviously really important, and I'm not convinced that both adapters have diopters of comperable quality. I've noticed that the center of my cheap diopter gives an image free of chromatic abberation and distortion when used in an adapter, while the edges are blurry, soft, and show major color seperation. Certainly testing for chromatic abberation with a high contrast scene, strange as it would seem, would reveal a great deal about diopter quality, as would edge sharpness and resolution tests.

Just some suggestions. Feel free to ignore them since you probably have some better tests in mind, but I think that these tests would prove pretty interesting since they would test the possible weak points of both adapters.

Those are great ideas, Policar. And I see you have 999 posts!

I, too, wonder about the Micro35 / G35 in combination with HD resolution and what effect it will have on grain visibility. A good, thorough test with both adapters would be extremely helpful.

I really hope these things work well with the HVX200!

Gentelment, as far as the tests i have done, i think this adaptors will be useless with HD cameras as the HVX200. With that much resolution whatever you stick that is more than f2.0 will show grain. It is not a big thing if you downcorvert to SD, but if you plan to go to film, i think it will be to noticeable. It is a pity.

I am having problems with the FX1 as soon as there is some white wall or sky with the G35. If you stay at a dark environment it will be ok. However, even with the static grain, i think i prefer it to have it than not using the 35mm adaptor. So...

Macgregor,
You have an early prototype. Our newer screens such as the one elrosten has, have much finer grain.

Great then. I was expecting you would say something like that. Good news then.

Yep, your upgrade will be the new and impoved verson. We call it the G2. (Just kidding) :cheesy:

JHouser,
I believe by the time your adapter finally comes out, everyone would have completed their DIY adapters to their own perfection or do some vigorous tests on their XL2s and DVXs in order to get that DOF look.
Come on now, you guys don't update anything in regards to your products and how many indie guys do you think will wait for fall to shoot their movies or wait for next spring to start shooting????
I really think you guys needs to re-do your marketing strategy.

I am sure a lot of us are already tired of waiting because it will be difficult to get the actual actors you want in your movie during winter.

I don't know about most indie guys up in here but as for me, I have started looking into ways I can get this $4,000 bucks piece of euipment to get me something close to what I want and this is a sample shot of my XL2.

File uploaded and reachable from the following project:

Don't get me wrong, because I am not trying to pull your product down or anything, I am sure you have a great product coming out but you have to understand that most of these people in here are gurus when it comes to assembling things and I am sure they are always ready to dig the internet to find ways of getting thier equipments since you guys keep wasting time. Time is money for the amount of bucks they have invested.

This also goes to goes to the Micro35 guys. They told me I have to wait 4 weeks at least but as long as they have the product for my XL2 I wouldn't mind waiting some extra few weeks, besides, that will give even me some more time to get other equips. ready.

By the way, you guys should relax with the $999 bucks men, people are getting this adapaters done now for - $500 bucks.

Thanks for your post. Let me try to clear some things up for you.

Possibly. However, you do need to realize there is another world out there other than the DIY DVXUSER.COM crowd. We are appealing to a large market mainly comprised of shooters who want to shoot, not build lens adapters.

Our product has undergone a very reasonable time frame. I feel I don’t need to defend our “marketing strategy” to anyone. Our marketing has done quite well for us.

Keep experimenting. It makes you better.

I’m not sure what you are getting at here. I don’t feel we are wasting anyone’s time. We have not taken any money on any units we have not delivered. Apple Computer announced their Intel chips more than a year ahead of their release date. Why not e-mail them to complain?

.

I can’t speak for them….

I’m really not sure what that sentence is supposed to mean. Our product will be worth what we are charging. Many people will agree.

I’m a working DP in Seattle. I’m more than just an engineer. I’m constantly working with other shooters getting feedback on the quality of our image, which will surpass anything on the market. We are building a product the right way. That takes time. You may not fully understand and appreciate that, but our clients will. Thanks again!

ummmmmm,

There are a lot of us out here who just don't have the time to research and build our own adaptors. Also, the $500 or $600 I save by making my own isn't worth taking the time off from work... not even close. I think these guys are doing a great job offering us the best adaptors they can build, might I add at a pretty decent price. I really don't think their only motivation is money. I think they're just like us... fascinated with Indy filmmaking, just with a little more entrepreneurial spirit. I've followed their community posts and even they admit they've had kinks to work out before shipping these things out.
I prefer to wait for finalized products and legitimate reviews.

We are totally THRILLED with our adapter, even though it is a prototype. Jonathan did a Great job building it. It truely delivers an EXCELLENT picture.

:-)

JHouser,
Well keep us updated on the progress. I understand these things can not be produced in a month but not everyone knows that there are more information about the progress of this product on this dvx site than your website.
I mean, I tried to locate the price and I had to click every thing on your website before I could get some information you guys posted months ago.

All I am saying is update update and update. Many of us are waiting for these adapters before we actually start shooting a real feature, if we have an exact time or something perfectly close to it, we can know when to get things ready for these movies we are trying to make.

Damon, you are absolutely right, we don't have time to start making our own adapters since there are other things we still need to learn. Many of us are lucky enough to have distributors and marketers that believes in our work and they want to start seeing something done and telling them they should wait till fall is something is us up.

JHouser, don't get me wrong men. I am just one of those people looking forward to start making real green with your adapter.

So like everyone have been asking, inform us so that we can inform others that will inform others when they should be expecting better quality services.

One thing I can say is that I have anxiously been waiting for the Guerilla 35 to be out in the market. Am I going bananas because it is almost the end of summer and there is no product yet?...nope.

Do I get tired of watching their posted demos over and over again?...not a chance.

I am kinda glad none of the products are out being sold in mass quantities. Why you ask? Out of my own impatience, I am one of those guys "wasting" my time building my own 35mm adapter. Heck...I've shelled out more money buying macro lenses, filters, specialized ground glass, etc.etc. I figure I could have bought 3 Guerilla35's at $999 a piece with all the money I have dished out. Am I upset....absolutely not!

I totally agree with Jonathan when he says " Keep experimenting. It makes you better". In the last couple of months I have learned more about light, cinema techniques, light properties and 35mm lenses than I ever thought i would want to know. Some of you probably have followed the progress of my adapter since the first prototype till the finished model. I am darn proud of how It has evolved. Nothing can take away the feeling of seeing the first upside down AND focused image being projected through the camera lense. It is a learning experience and it only makes you better in your craft.

And you know what? I will still purchase the Guerilla35 when it comes out. I always say "you can't microwave a Thanksgiving Turkey" If it takes time to produce these adapters...so be it. I want to pay for a quality product that won't givevme headaches. If I want mediocracy then I will continue to make more of my adapters. Good things come to those who wait...right?

Hey Jonathan...how about getting it ready for December. I know my wife would gladly purchase it as a Christmas gift for me. God knows she is sick and tired of my babbling about the product. She would gladly purchase it only to shut me up!

Words only from a man who has slaved as all of us have on these adapters.

Lord knows how much I want a G35 under every filmmakers tree this Christmas. We are doing our best. Thanks for the continued support.

I for one have been following the indie DIY adapter thread for a while now, and i have to say this. Yes the guerilla35 website isn't great, but i'll tell you something. When their product comes out it will be amazing. My only input in this would be i hope for the HD market your glass improves and we see less grain.

As for the micro35, Jonathan can't comment, but I can. the M2 seems like a great product, but I would advise people compare the sample images(burn them to dvd or whatever) to the G35 and make up your own mind. I for one, think the G35 is miles better.

I for one will be ordering the G35 from London when it comes. I can't wait, but i will. I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

Guys,
The funniest thing is, I intend buying both products (G35 and Micro35). I am actually ordering the Micro35 this friday and the G35 whenever it is out, but how do you guys feel anytime you learn something awesome and you are like, damn, how I wish I have one of these adapters so that I can know what this particular camera settings will look like since it already look awesome with out it.

Or may be because I could be fighting for big projects since these clients wants a 35mm film dof, etc.

O by the way, could we have more demos please, even if it is you shooting the tree in your backyard or something.

December ????????????????????????????????????

Ok Eniola, calm down ........caaaaaaalm down.

JHouser,
May I ask why? That's an extra 3.5 months of wait time.
