C100: Grip Extension Cable

I need a grip extension cable so I can connect the grip to the C100 while it's on my Ronin M and change aperture/ISO and check media between takes.

What's the best option? Would a LANC cable work?

I don't believe that a LANC cable will work as they are two different sized plugs. The Grip uses a 1/8" sized plug but I believe it has one extra ring so a regular 1/8" extender wouldn't work. But don't hold me too that second part.

No, that sounds right. Unfortunately.

I tested it, it doesn't work. Also tested a mini jack cable with all the 4 rings, doesn't work.

In fact it is a 4 ring mini jack on those grips, but with another kind of ground circling around it, which makes the difference, and cannot be found in any standard cable I searched for and tried.

It is a real pity that you have to buy these ridiculously expensive grip relocators in order to do that..

Hmm, there has to be some kind of mini jack that is possible to buy. When I bought my used C100 the owner also gave me a longer (2-3m) cable with single button on the other end that was used to plug in where the grip is and it was used as a record button. So if he got it made somewhere than a mini jack has to be available...

Like I said, mini jacks are available, I tried one.
But it only triggered the REC command, all the joystick and wheel functions were not functioning.

I asked CoolLcd if they could provide a working cable and they said it was not possible for them to make it :/

I made one myself you need a cable with 6 wires and 6-pole-plugs, i used mini din plugs.
just cut the original cable in two and solder new plugs on them.

all functions are working ?????? I AM REALLY INTERESTED !!
can you explain a little more how did you do ? which plugs, which wire, which procedure ?
thanks !

i used 4 mini-din plugs(6 pole ones) brandname BKL
and for the cable i used
Flexible 6 Multicore Cable (just look on ebay)

Very interesting, good work!
but still you have a zacuto grip relocator which I don't...so I don't know how to do without it...

canon uses a special custom made minijack with 6 contacts (normal ones only have 3 or 4 contacts), i don't think you can buy these parts your self but if you find them i would be verry interested ;-).

I did bite the bullit and bought the zacuto grip relocator wich ended up being rather short thick and unflexible, oke for a rig but way to short for the ronin.
So i ended up canibalizing the zacuto relocator to extend it with a bit more flexible cable.

hm. That's a pity, if Zacuto can make it, we should too :)
Thanks for the info though, you did a good job.

Fwiw, rather than solving this I mapped the up/down/right/left buttons to the play buttons on the camera as though they were a keypad. (Mapping the remaining two, top right and top left, to aperture up and down.)

It's great!

This camera is so good. The color is so good.

Interesting because even Zacuto mentions their relocator provides only limited control. I have seen other posts claiming the joystick is not supported with the Zacuto cable. Can you reconfirm the Zacuto cable passes ALL signals?

^Yeah, I get that some have had problems with either connectors pulling out unexpectedly or field-casualties with the wiring internal to the relocator but I still don't see anything in Zacuto's sales blurb mentioning fully-functional menu nav via the joystick. They stop short of printing that. If this is a made-for-C100 MKII kit meaning someone here has direct experience with using the joystick, please chime in.

It's just an extension cable. There aren't any electronics. I guess that resistance in the wire could change the voltages, but it's not a long wire. I've never used it with a MKii, but there is no physical reason why a grip relocator wouldn't allow full functionality.

My questioning is because Zacuto intentionally omits joystick capability in the product description. It's one thing to mention it verbally during a trade show but if it's not in writing, I have to verify with a bonafide user. I do know the ARRI part does work according to a co-worker. I really hate to part with $850 let alone $500 for the Zacuto.

Look at this way, a typical TRRS 2.5mm phone jack has just 4 electrical pathways. We know the Canon connector has an additional outer sleeve(s) to possibly carry more pathway(s). If Zacuto is unable or unwilling to duplicate or otherwise obtain that magic connector, something would need to be eliminated- like the up/dn/lt/rt & center functions...

Talk to Zacuto directly. I'm not sure what your concern comes from. Mine works and passes all of the controls. I had a couple that didn't work due to a bad plug and Zacuto replaced them free of charge.

I'm sure the controller doesn't use a simple on/off signal, so a bad cable could cause problems due to resistance. But, it isn't that complicated.

The Zacuto grip re-locator passes all signals. joystick, buttons, record.

I agree that the prices are high on the relocators, but to make a custom cable, with custom ends.. that aren't flimsy.. costs money. I'm sure they aren't selling 10's of thousands either. - Plus the machining on the threads where the grip attaches. I hate that I had to spend it.. but it was worth it. My main complaint is that the clamps they use to mount the relocator are quite limiting in how/where you can put it.
