Here are some test shots I did using the avchd "c" settings.

All shots were done with the standard kit lens with a cokin ND grad.

Manual focus for all shots done by hand as I don't have a follow focus, hence the shaky footage.

I'm really liking what I'm seeing now. I feel like I have a brand new camera.

Hey Chris,

Footage looks great! I saw on your blog you use FCP. What is your workflow from SD to Vimeo? I'm never happy with my clips as they always look washed out (I think due to H.264), and never look the same as the canvas in FCP. But yours look so vibrant.

1:18 is my favourite shot too Chris!...the fine hair detail on the original footage at 1080 on a big screen is amazing.

Just Wow!

Which shots were using digital zoom -- :50 - 1:05? I probably wouldn't even have noticed if you hadn't mentioned it because the rest of the footage was so outstanding.
 
Hi Ron,

Workflow for this clip was:

Import mts files to Cineform Neoscene -> export ProRes

Import ProRes into FCP -> edit -> colour correct w standard CC in FCP

Export using compressor to 10mbs h264 multipass (as suggested by Hunter Richards in his post) http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=213886&page=2

Upload to Vimeo. Hopefully that works for you too.

Spot on. Those are the shots. 2x digital zoom...the image falls apart when you try to do too much CC which you'd expect since (as I understand it) its just blowing up the image. It is really only the background where you notice it though.

If I was doing a commercial job I'd just get a decent macro lens for shots like this but I hadn't tested the in camera zoom so I thought I'd give it a try and the subject lent itself to it. If it was just to go on the web you could probably get away with it though...

Hey Chris,

Thanks for that. How come you use Cineform Neoscene and not just FCP log and transfer? Is it an NTSC reason? Have you noticed washed out colours in H.264 exports before? Regards, Jon

Hey Jon,

I use cineform as I have a PC and Mac workflow and it seems to be the best cross platform solution and I only recently got FCP so I haven't had time to test to see if what the differences are between cineform and Log and Transfer.

Cineform was recommended to me by a good friend who has a lot more film/video experience than me. I don't have any real technical knowledge to tell you the differences but I know that workflow works for me right now.

As for the gamma/washed out issues I haven't had any but I've certainly heard about it. Not sure of the solution sorry. There wasn't any magic tick box or setting that I flicked.
