Green Screen

Hey all, I was wondering how much green screening you guys do with the HVX and do you make your own green areas or try to get the cheapest studio you can find?

I ask because a friend has about 10,000 sqr. ft and asked if there was a market for space only, bring your own equipment type of deal. I figure for the india film maker renting a big studio would be expensive and something like this would be welcome.
I also would like to know what everyone thinks is a fair 1/2 day and full day rental fee for space only.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

That's a cool idea. But where are you? Is there a large enough demand in that particular area? If he had lights and such it'd fetch a bigger price. I'd be happy to pay around around 250-400 bones for a half day in a big ol' lit up green screen studio, and I'm just a one man band sort of guy. I guess it'd depend on the area. Let me know if works out for him. I'll paint my whole freakin' house green--charge people 200 bucks a day; tell them to keep the noise down. Maybe, I'll get some green blankets and pajamas and crap and then people could just shoot around me.

We have a 36' X 48' 3 wall cyc that we normally have painted white. In 2 weeks we are painting it Chroma Key Green. (Yes, the client is paying for painting it green and BACK to white).

Thursday and Friday we are renting the studio for $1,000.00 per day plus $20.00 per hour for power, (Don't forget power with thousands of watts plus AC).
We also mandate that they pay for a PA @ $25.00 per hour because they always need to ask questions anyway, i.e. "what plugs in where"?
The PA also acts as the police. If they are being stupid on our virgin floor, he can control it or confirm they need to cover for a re-paint. He also make sure all our production tools are there when they leave!:)

Honestly we don't use it as much as we'd like. But the WOW factor is huge when clients first check us out. Seems like the last 3-4 months have been great though. Maybe after 9 years people are catching on!:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
We allow outside companies to rent it, but honestly with the 2-3 shoot per re-paint factor, even at $1,000.00 it isn't always worth it.

The studio does get us a lot more jobs though. We are highly respected in this market, (hopefully for the quality of our work and great customer service), but also because it makes a statement that we take production seriously. Clients that rarely use the studio continue to use us for location shoots and post work. I guess the studio helps get them in the door. Then we gotta keep them!

I'm sure in Brooklyn there is enough work. Just make sure that there are not already an oversaturation of similar facilities.
Our "crappy" website has a picture if you want to take a look. (I swear when I get time I'm going to improve the website!

Good luck and keep us posted.

I have nothing to add to this thread, but that comment is hillarious!

- Mikko ... has C-key green curtians. Really.

How many days out ofthe week do you rent and do indie people come and ask about a cheaper rate? Your studio looks like it has everything one can need. You really have to paint it after the 2-3 time? I would make them walk through a carpet hall way first to clean the shoes.

Aram, I always get asked for cheaper rates. ;) If I'm feeling good I sometimes give a discount but I try to not open that door. It sometimes leads to grief later.

Yup, we can push the floor to 5-6 shoots if we're careful. We have to paint the entire studio about every 3-4 floor paintings or you begin to see the "feathering" we do at the coving.
I miss the good old days of 18% grey. We could usually go about a year without painting except after car shots. They kill the floor quickly. But so does our lift when adjusting lights. Most grid lights are set up "genericly" and we do the rest from the floor when possible.

YES!!! Everyone wears surgical booties except the talent when we shoot them head to toe. I get them for about $15 per box.

Hey Aram is the studio soundproof? huge plus if it is...

also, if repainting is an issue, we use to put green gels on our tungstens and that gave us a pretty nice green backdrop. i forget why we stopped doing that and went back to green paint.

Right now its just wide open space. Thats the first thing I thought of too because if he plans on putting other things around it like a dance studio its going to need some serious sound proofing.

A green screen stage in brooklyn would be cool

If you had a green screen stage in Dumbo I think that would rock. I would pay a few hundred a day for it. I am an indie filmmaker myself.
