Green Screen Suits

[S7CK]

Hey guys, I couldn't find a chroma key category so I figured FCP would be a good place to ask.

Does anyone know what the suits the actors who played the aliens in district 9 are called? I would love to find out more information on this and what kind of software/technique is involved. I've seen short clips of the film before edits and the actors appear to be wearing some kind of grey suit(looked more like the 3d suits, I think there was little light bulbs on the joints of the actor). I need as much info on this stuff as possible! Thanks!

Also, I saw the actor who played smeagol/gollum in lotr wore the same suit, but that was 5-6 years ago, thats like 20 years in film tech.

I actually still haven't seen the flick, but the suits you're talking about are probably motion-capture.

Thanks Tom, those are the kind of suits I was thinking of.

But in regards to your last sentence, you have to go watch D9. It was unbelievable.

Here's a source for green screen suits:

But this sounds like motion capture.

Yeah those were basically mocap reference suits for the other actors to play off- much of the actual character animation in D9 was done by hand. It's basically there for framing and actor reference- that gets rotoscoped out frame by frame and replaced by CG animation. And yes it's really hard to do well.
