got my new xh a1 last week. it's broken already! the dial to switch the cam on only works in 'play' direction, in any cam direction the LED does not light up and the cam remains 'dead'.
i called canon (netherlands) and they will call me back 'within three working days'. it's day three now. i hope their service is not as bad as i fear it to be...

I feel your pain, my friend. When I first bought my XH-A1 it would not turn on either. I called the store and 24 hours latter they replaced it with a brand new one. It sucked having to wait for it to arrive again...but when it did all my dreams came true :D

This should be a sticky. dee I hope you read this.

Behind the tape bay is a swtich thats marked standby and lock, On lock what your describing is normal, turn it to standby for fun and happiness.

It was not what happened to me. It did turn on the first times but then it gradually took longer to turn on as I switched the camera on, until the point when it no longer would turn on.

Hurray!

Hurray!

wow!!!! you're right, and BETTER than Canon helpdesk who couldn't solve the problem at all!

the point was that the tiny dial was on 'standby' visually, but _just_ outside its 'click'!!!! so just turning it properly into the click solved the problem!

this is really great! i'm glad i have this problem *before* important shoots, and not during one!! :cheesy:

thank you thank you!

thank you!!!!!!

this is a great forum!!

greetings from amsterdam, happy new year!! david

Hi Noel;
That exact thing happened to me too..ON A SHOOT. Instead of panicking, I excused myself, sat inside my van by myself and tried to analyze the situation...Once I tried the standby lock swith, all was well...I must admit though beforehand, there were some very bad words going thru my head..hahahhahahha

yeah i'm soo glad it didn't happen on a shoot!
this would be one of the things you would expect in the troubleshooting part of a manual, but of course it isn't there. i sometimes wonder about indexes as well, i rarely find words that i'm looking for (esp. in the xh a1 manual!)

ah well.. good start of my 2008.

Gee Iam glad Iam not the only ( DODO) one that did this. Last week I was testing
a new shotgun Mike. the next day I went to shoot some footage and the camera wouldn't turn on. Panic sets in ahk I broke it, after 10 minutes of carefully looking around I found it Locked.. Must have accidently hit the lock switch as I was putting it away in its case.... Big Sigh of relief.

Yeah whenever this happens to me the case is always that somehow it was accidentally switched on and everytime it happens my heart skips a beat when the camera wont turn on and just after I check and find that the battery has a full charge, I think, "Wait a second... Better check that pesky lock!"

I dread the day that the "pesky lock" isn't the problem.

...i just found out that it actually is in he troubleshooting section of the manual!
and canon even called back, some days later than promised but still..

Haha, I was trying to turn mine on (I got it brand new today) and it wasn't working. I almost freaked...but then I remembered this thread. Glad I did my research before I bought it.
