Michael is into green work and so I said I should make a music video using green screen. One idea to somehow make it unique is to clone them. On the day of shooting, I just allowed the kids to act anyway they want so I wasn't really directing and I think they did good. After shooting, we all put a bunch of ideas together to think about how the final piece will look and here it is.

It was shot with the Panasonic GH2 using the 20mm lens. The green screen was not anything fancy and the florescent lighting came from TubeTape. It was edited in Premiere Pro CS5 using Ultra Key rather than After Effects. Besides the drums scenes which was a bit chaotic with the shadows on the floor and the symbols reflecting the green, The Ultra Keyer did pretty good considering it was a cheap green material that we used and because we were shooting in a tight place, the lighting wasn't in the best spots but it still ended up decent. I used PhotoShop for the night scene. The swimming scenes were shot with the SD600 and the other real life scenes as well as the flying scenes were shot with the Canon S95. The flying scenes were edited by Michael and then inserted into the video.

This whole idea was just for fun and because of it, I've become pretty good using the Ultra Key feature in CS5. It's my first big project using Ultra Key. I've done concert videos and even edited multi cam concert videos but this is the first time making a traditional music video. I expect to be much better next time.

Sometimes decisions can be hard to make. We thought about rather or not to use certain outdoor clips that weren't shot by me but we figured that since some of these clips can work with the song, we might as well put them in. The only outdoor shots done by me were the swimming and trampoline scenes and the day wasn't that good but we still felt to use those shots. In the end we figured that since the audience are mostly kids, it might not matter too much. I definitely would have liked if all the outdoor shots were as good as the indoor green screen shoots.

One of the few music videos I've made it through to the end...

The only shots I really thought could be dispatched to the cutting room floor were the 'flying through the clouds' shots... the just really didn't work for me. The less quality on the outdoor shots, especially some of the pool shots were sort of made up by 'well they are kids after all'... The roller coaster shots seemed ok, but I'd also speed those up a bit, some of them seemed a bit sluggish... maybe a bit of blur as well...

That flying scene was actually completely done by Michael himself. I then inserted it in. Maybe I didn't do a good job putting it in the right spot in the music video but the song is sort of about flying as well and that's why the kids wanted at least 1 flying scene. This was a 100% full collaboration. It was also a learning experience for me since when I said we should make a music video that was mostly green screen, at the time I gave the idea, I only started using the Ultra key feature in a few samples just to fool around. It was also a bit of a risk starting a project in which I haven't had much experience with green screen in Premiere and never producing a normal music video before. At least I'm a bit more knowledgeable now to take my next big music video to the next level. The family knows someone who has a real green screen room with expensive lighting. That's probably a far better set-up then we used so who knows how good the next one will look especially if I were to hire a green screen expert this time since some of the ideas I have are far more ambitious than this video.
