GH3 Great Review of the Blackmagic Pocket Cine Camera

...I'm not certain I have any idea what this has to do with the GH3, though...

Tangentially potential GH3 purchasers may be (and some are) being tempted away to this camera because of its IQ. I was one of the first to preorder a pocket but later cancelled, deciding after a thorough review that the GH series provided more of what I wanted and needed.

I think its a healthy discussion.

I'll likely test a BMPCC when they're readily available, but at best it will be an addition to my m43 system, & not a replacement for the GH3s.

afraid I'm not certain I have any idea what this has to do with the GH3, though...

I consider myself more as a m4/3 shooter than a GH3 film-maker, so I am happy to have alternative m4/3 compatible cameras that can fully utilize my m4/3 glass.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cine camera fills a very big hole in the current GHx line-up...

- Wide Dynamic range ( 13 stops, compared to the GH3's 9 stops )
- Low compressed high bit-rate 4:2:2 recording
- RAW recording ( coming very soon )

Having a BMPCC body in your camera kit ( along with your GH3 ) means that you can handle challenging lighting situations where the GH3 does poorly.

Also, to the point, it might be used in tandem with the GH3 as a beta cam or primary cam and the GH3 as beta - either way. If both take the same lenses, it might make sense to own both and use the GH3 in some situations where it is better and the BMPCC in other situations. My personal take is that the BMPCC is not fully baked, and so I'm not about to buy a 1.0 release. I'm interested in what they come up with in the 2.0 version.

Well version 1.0 is getting better. The "black-hole sun" and the "white dot" problems have now been fixed, and RAW recording is coming very soon.

I could see this camera being very handy when shooting weddings in bright sunlight, where with the GH3 you would have to choose between exposing for the bride's white dress or the dark suits, but the BMPCC could capture both perfectly when shooting RAW footage.

Same goes for shooting at night in the city ( like the sample shoot in the review link above ), where you can hold detail in both the bright lights and the darker shadows with this Pocket camera.

At 20 minutes of RAW recording with a 64 GB SDXC card, I couldn't see this camera replacing my GH3, but it will definitely come in handy in certain situations.

I read some review that said it eats batteries fast.

Yes, it's a total battery hog. So if you were going to shoot for a whole day you would need a larger external battery or dozens of camera batteries.

The same goes for SDXC cards when shooting RAW, where you would need 12 64GB cards for 4 hours of footage.

Which a huge cost that most people forget when they talk about the BMPC undercutting the GH3 for price. Its not $1K camera if you hope to shoot anything on it.

This is why I don't look at the BMPCC as a replacement to any of the GHx cameras, but rather as a specialized m4/3 camera body that you use when you absolutely need to.

I just ordered one. I just sold my GH2 body and kept my 14-140 lens. I ordered 2 of the Sandisk EP 32GB cards and 3 nikon batteries along with a charger. - I expect to add an external monitor later on and Il use an external mic. I shoot car videos, and the biggest draw for me is the 13 stops of DR. Color grading RAW later on will just be outstanding.

Perhaps if Funds allow Il order one of the metabones speedboosters to make use of the nikon lenses at my work when they have that adapter ready. Since I will rarely shoot more than 45-60 min of footage per shoot. It will be easy to be swapping between the cards, dumping footage on a laptop as I go.

Random but I have experience as a machinist and access to cnc production equipment. I might try my hand at designing a cage for the camera to aid with attaching accessories and such.
