Just thought I would let you guys know that after toying with tons of ways of
moving large amounts of data to and from desktop and laptop, I found the best drive so far to be the Seagate GoFlex pro usb 3.0
I have toyed with them all... usb 2.0 (bleeeech slow) esata (fast but not really portable you need wall wart plugs) firewire 400 & 800.
By far, the fastest external hard drive so far I have seen is the GoFlex Pro 750 gig.
With usb 3.0 transferring big sequential files I have hit 130 megs a second transfer rate, and with transferring non sequential files it averages between 50 to 90 megs a second)
It's tiny, about the size of a wallet, come with a nice wallet like protective case, is usb powered, and is 7200 rpm so you it's fast and you can edit right on it with ease. Plus, at about $100 bucks you can't go wrong. It also comes with two usb 3.0 cables. One is a little dock base station for you desktop, and then one for the drive on the go with laptops ect.
Even better is the fact thats it's one of the few drives that can be read on both Win 7 and Mac. So I can bring it to Mac clients and dump footage to them.
It can also easily snap off and change cable types, so you can use any cable you want...
Great little drive, but there are a LOT of them out there - don't be confused make sure it is goflex pro usb 3.0 - I did the tests and that one rocked the others in speed.
