So i saw this thing at Nab at the Location Sound booth.
According to the sales people at location that i just talked to it should be shipping in June or July for $799.

This could be a great solution to replace a h4n or something of the like.

Edit:
i just noticed the remote feature. I'm not sure how it works but it says it can trigger camera recording when the audio starts, or maybe its the other way around but that combined with the slate tone could make syncing really easy.

That's an awful lot of dough for a sound recorder. Lots of other options that work just fine for less then half of $800...

If they had put xlr outs on it, could have been a 302 killer...still might be for some situations..if it sounds good.

Yeah i agree that the price is a little steep but i like the functionality that other recorders lack like the tone generator for syncing and the auto triggering to make it line up nicely with your footage.

If it had a way to run time-code out i could be completely sold. Maybe it could do it the same way the lockit buddy works. Maybe it sends a mixed signal (all three mics down to the right channel) and then timecode on the left. Then you could sync your slate and other cameras with it as well. Would be a great solution for studio work with a multi-cam set up

How is an audio track of TC helpful in the age of NLE? Do some editing programs extract TC from the audio and make it usable in file based editing?

About the price of the fostex..the 302 is mixer only and a few hundred more than the fostex. But considering the age of the 302, I'd bet on a revision/upgrade in near future..especially in light of Fostex's offering. At minimum, a 302-D a la the mixpre-D or a 302/2 with built in 2 track recorder.

If you have matching timecode on both your sound & picture, it's very fast to sync them together.

Yes..but I was thinking the software would only be aware of TC as timestamping in the file...likek the video file. How does it know to look at an audio channel for that info in stead of thinking it's just an incredibly noisy audio recording?? Maybe this is assuming a specific software for editing. I am unaware of Vegas extracting TC info from audio tracks, for example.

Ah...so select programs can access it. Understood.
I am surprised there is talk of a June or July release for the Fostex unit considering they didn't have a working prototype at NAB. That would be cool though. My sense was that it was further off. It would also be cool if you get a "pro" version with some kind of balanced outputs.

Yeah the version at nab was a little disappointing but had potential. Location Sound said they would have a working prototype at cinegear in june if your in the LA area.
