Grain induced...

Totally bitter today. Fighting off a nasty pre-summer cough I aquired from my son who aquired it form my wife who aquired it form my brothers 18 Month old son. Here's an idea! Let's bring the kid over to the barbeque the day after his flu shots! - Oh, sorry.

Always trying to find the 16mm Vibe; this time the colors are desaturated. Not much to look at; I'm sick and bored today so just sharing grabs; adding to the ever growing DVX Image Gallery.

Yeah, I know they're 'shots around the house'. I'm sick. :lipsrseal :undecided :embarasse

I'm on the quest to find my look; something I havent done yet. Grain induced by Contrast/Brightness and Levels adjustment.

john that first one is awesome. brightness/contrast the only color correction or just to bring out the grain (noise?)? I can't wait to go home and try to play around with this idea.

Thanks The Mac

It is a combination of oversaturation as I always do but then using a kind of WW2 PRST Plug In that D Jimerson created with 'Celluloid' (basically a Brightness/Contrast, Bump Map and Color Corrector). I cannot NOT completley tear apart my image; it's like a junkie on Methanol....

...the Contrast/Brightness and Levels adjustments are the last in line above all of that; pay close attention to your IRE in the Waveform; this is crucial.

This is before the above steps; but not TRUE footage. On this grab, the HSL Adjust has been used for the S16.

And here is TRUE in-camera (Boooorrrriinnnggggggggg)

wow i have a lot to learn about color correction. just practice, i guess. What caused the blur at the bottom of the frame?

A Teak Chair.

At least the learning part is fun; you just keep playing and playing and playing until you find what you like and the method or steps to get there; being sick today; I just wanted to play with some stuff.

This look isn't for everyone; some people hate the grain or the coloring but you gotta find what you want and/or the style of the project.

Tonight will be more play if I turn off BF 1942

Thanks Kova

These buckets are Cintranella (sp?) for the 'HIV carrying skeeters' that like to get in the way of my barbeques and Coronafests.

The post work you did on the first pic looks great, reminds me of the look Tony Scott has been using lately. How does it look on moving images?... I'd like to see it on a person, it's a real cool look, i'm diggin it.

hope you get better, good on you to use sick time to practise, I get sick i'm utterly useless(not that that's a stretch from the norm)

John, the first one kicks ass. The others are nice, and if you hadn't posted the first one, I might like them, but the first one is really great.

Exactly my point.

Yesterday, I took Walter Graff's lighting class, it was excellent! Tomorrow I'm going to try and write a review.

Matt

Awesome. I look forward to it. Man, lighting is something I really want/need to understand. I think it is the key to this thing called cinematography. :P

Just found this thread. Neat stuff, keep up the good work, John.

Also did you really mean "a junkie on Methanol?" Or did you mean "Methadone"?

I for one am a Methanol junkie... and no I do not ingest the stuff...

well, other than odor that comes from the exhaust!

About grain, my freind who is a actualy "film" filmamaker, complains the grain on the DVX doesnt look right. what most closely approximates film grain? 3db gain? or your method, which is the method i used for this footage, Levels, and contast.

It looked alright to me, but it didint convince him.

whats considered natural film grain? are there any films shot on 16mm thati can rent to see?

I think it looks great, myself. On the one hand, if you showed him a clip and not a screencap, maybe the apparent "movement" of the fake film grain didn't match what he's used to.

But on the other hand, maybe he simply was fooling himself. Being a director of technical department (not in a film sense) in my day job, I cannot tell you how many studies and tests I have seen about this effect. Overwhelmingly, people who think they can tell the differnence between A nd B, are prejudiced - and I mean that literally: pre- decided - by either their personal preference ("Video doesn't look as good as film"), dogmatic opinions ("Video can't look the same as film"), or simply not wanting to be wrong.

I saw a test recently where people were asked to compare brand name products to store-brand or generic products, for example, Kleenex vs. generic facial tissue; Cheerios vs. generic toasted oats, etc.

Not only did almost everyone in the test believe they could tell the difference, they were also almost always incorrect. One conclusion might be that the generic stuff actually tastes or functions better, but another conclusion is that people are so dead set on their own ablilities to detect or notice something that they gravitate toward one pole.

I say to go with what looks good to ya, but do SOMEthing! :)

I don't understand how there can be such discussion around film grain when this is a single still. The true way to gauge it is to see some footage.

C'mon John, get the lead out and post some footage. You'll be glad you did :)
