Graeme native

Ok, I'm aware that we will be able to use Redcode on Apple and Windows, but since I'm guessing Graeme is Mac native, would I probably get better results ( easier work flow, better quality, or anything I may have left out) If I switch over to Mac in April?

Since Graeme and the guys have said they are planning on making it work on both platforms, I'd suggest waiting until everything's done before getting worked up about a platform change. Unless, of course, you're planning on the transition anyway.

Don't worry, aside from Graeme being a genious programmer, what he is writing is code in a language that exists in both platforms and the real guts of it are, I would imagine, User Interface free.

Most of the difference between platforms come when you are creating the user interface--so if he were writing extreme user interfaces, I would think you might have a cause for concern (one that would be easily set to rest with the genious programmer argument)--but since his real magic is 95% behind the scenes I wouldn't worry at all.

Please don't let this dive into another OS wars thread. The wars are over--we all win. RED will bring the two camps together and make everyone happy.

Yes, I like Macs - after all, it's just Unix wrapped in chocolate. But when it comes down to it, the editing experience should be good where-ever. We're a camera company remember, so you've got to enjoy using our camera on whatever platform, Mac or PC, you use, and we hope to also develop some linux tools too (but that's not definate).

Let's save the wars for "camera wars" rather than for platform wars.

Just to sprinkle a _little_ bit of gasoline, but hopefully in the spirit of clarity, did I not see Jim (think it was him, right?) profess to be Mac and FCP centric? Not to say it isn't going to be made to work as best as possible as widely as possible, but if you're looking for biggest bang for development buck spent, would that not be for Final Cut Pro first, Avid second, Premiere third? I'm entirely open to being wrong on any of this, but I think I heard that FCP has the widest installed base...or was that some Apple marketing schtick being thrown at me? Skipping the political and technical nuances (which are NOT small), isn't that the practical order of operations for ANYBODY getting into the camera market to support?

Don't forget REDCINE will support ANY Mac or PC app that you can "normally" write to their codec, I take it we are talking about native, direct ingest into the NLE type of workflow support here.

Not trying to start a platform debate here. Asking purely for the sake of education... What is the difference really between FCP and Premiere Pro? They're both just editing systems... If you want magic to your shots you'd run them by some other compositing software, right? So what really is this advantage FCP has on Premiere? I've used both and the tools are pretty much the same... OR..? I'm really interested here.

Does OS matter?

Does OS matter?

There are some legitimate architechtural issus at play here. Can the OS, the CPU , the RAM and the main bus support 64 bits? Does the application support 12 bit codecs? Does the platform limit files to 2Gigs each? How clean is the code at the kernal level? Insert at least another dozen issues here.

Love Macs or hate them the vitality of FCP on Macs has been a huge driver in the post production space. We are all beneficiaries of THIS war. My advice is to wait until Graeme has a shipping build of RedCine out there that can be tested on both boxes before you buy a new computer to use with it. If you absolutely have to buy a new box sooner than that just buy what you feel the most comfortable with and plunge in.

I know about 1073 beta testers that could give REDCINE a run through for you.

Will we get a chance to play with it before camera delivery?

The real difference is basic life philosophy.

Windows Creator Bill Gates is the worlds greatest humanitarian spending hundreds of millions in Africa this year feeding starving children. Steve Jobs does not make charitable contributions. His only donations have been to political parties (buying favors). Unlike Bill Gates, Steve jobs does not support helping West African babies. Yes, Steve jobs supports the starving of African babies.

Don't hate babies like Steve Jobs; use a Windows PC.

p.s. I figured I'd just take the platform war all the way to it's logical conclusion so it doesn't need to go 5 or 6 pages.

p.p.s. :) :) :)

edit: added smileys for clarity.
